NONPF has represented them within nine broad areas of core competence. NONPF created the first set of Nurse Practitioner Competencies in 1990; the most recent updates were incorporated in 2017. National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies
The scientific foundations competency in nursing ensures that the nurse is equipped with knowledge on medical sciences, whereby they must undertake courses such as pharmacology and pathophysiology(Stewart, 2018). This course has helped me develop competencies in scientific foundations as a nurse because I learned how to use and conduct evidence-based research, understand clinical practice guidelines, and use medical knowledge to conduct nursing diagnosis on a patient.
This competency ensures that the nurses develops professional accountability, and advocacy, which is important in leading nursing teams. By taking this course, I feel prepared to be a nurse leader because I learned about leadership styles in nursing, learned how to use critical thinking skills, learned how to incorporate innovation in a healthcare setting, and developed excellent communication skills which are a requisite for a nurse leader.National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Essay
With this competency, the nurse is expected to develop competence in ensuring that patient outcomes are consistent with the professional nursing standards and the nurse can use information to evaluate research findings, and apply them in medical situations (Tracy, 2019). This course enables me to develop quality competencies because I learned how to consider issues such as costs and safety in healthcare practice and assess factors which affect healthcare delivery.
Practice Inquiry Competencies
This competency focuses on ensuring that nurses can apply the academic research they conduct on the clinical settings (Tracy, 2019). I believe that this course helped me gain competency in practice inquiry because I can now use information from clinical experience to enhance patient outcomes, I can use investigative information to healthcare settings and enhance patient outcomes.
Technology and Informational Literacy Competencies
This competency enables the nurse to use digital technology, networks, and communication tools to communicate information in the healthcare setting(Blair &Mirr Jansen, 2015). I developed these competencies by learning how to manage EHRs, understanding the HIPAA rules and regulations and how to comply, and how to translate health information to patients. These competencies ensure that the nurse understands how to participate in policy formulation, how to influence legislation, develops advocacy skills, among other practices (Omachonu, 2018). Taking this course enabled me to develop policy competencies because I gained knowledge on how to create policies, examine policies, apply ethics in policy making, and applying policy in different contexts such as their social and economic impacts in the healthcare system.
Health Delivery System Competencies

This course enabled me to develop ethics competencies by gaining knowledge on the ethical implications in nursing practice, and how to address ethical dilemmas that arise during practice. I learned about the various ethical principles and theories that affect the nursing profession and how to make ethical decisions that apply to individuals and communities.
Independent Practice Competencies
Developing this competency ensures that the nurse can operate independently as a licensed nurse. This course helped me develop independent practice competencies because I learned how to offer preventive care, counseling, apply diagnostic protocols, complying with regional laws on medication prescription, how to apply nursing ethics and distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings, among other competencies. As a nurse, I plan to engage in social change in my community by encouraging people to regularly go for cancer screenings. Most people discover they have cancer in its advanced stages, which limits the possibility of positive health outcomes (Lubejko&Wilson, 2019).
