May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012). Photo Credit: Getty Images Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity. Case Analysis for EB Essay Paper . How to Build a History
As the certified nurse on duty, I took the patient’s history upon arrival at the hospital. I greeted and welcomed the patient into the consultation room and ensured she was comfortable observing the confidentiality of the conversation. I asked her about the language she was comfortable to communicate with and she proceeds to explain her complaints. During the interview, I was actively listening, maintaining eye contact with the patient, and observing the non-verbal cues to understand what she meant. I did not interrupt her until it was my turn to talk. Barnes, P. A. The Target Questions
According to (Hultsjö, et al, 2019), I acknowledged the patient about sensitive questions that will help in assess her risks of the diseases. I asked her to explain when did the visual problem start? When was she diagnosed with hypertension? How often does she take her medication, and if she does not take it, I asked the reason. I asked her how many meals she takes in a day and what group of foodstuff she take most of the time. I asked her if she does physical exercise like walking or playing games.
Social-Economic Spiritual and Cultural Lifestyle
Madu, et al, (2020) interacting with patients from diverse backgrounds is challenging because of the language barrier, differences in beliefs, and norms. She could skip some questions because she could not understand them clearly. The patient was from a well up social-economic background because she could buy her medicine as prescribed by the doctor. However, she could not take the medication because of her spiritual and cultural lifestyle. The patient believes that having total faith in God would heal her from hypertension. As the nurse on duty, I showed empathy and exhibited loyalty by providing the appropriate health education to the patient.Case Analysis for EB Essay Paper
