VNUR20320 Veterinary Surgical Nursing
Academic Year 2021/2022
This module deals with management & “best practice” techniques relating to the operating room environment and the surgical team in veterinary practice. It also provides an introduction to veterinary surgical instrumentation and veterinary surgical nursing in particular preparing for surgery, intra-operative assistance and monitoring the post-operative recovery. The student will also explore conditions amenable to surgery, in addition to dentistry, and specific nursing care considerations for pre- and postoperative patients with a focus on small animal and equine patients. Attendance at practical classes and tutorials is compulsory as they are essential in order to fulfil the learning outcomes of this module. Insufficient attendance at learning activities such as practicals and tutorials will result in students being required to attend an oral examination to demonstrate competence in topics covered in practicals & tutorials.
Restrictions and consequences due to Covid 19 means that module delivery and planned practical activities will vary over the semester.
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
-Apply the principles of aseptic techniques
-Identify surgical instruments & explain their correct handling and maintenance;
-Identify, sterilise and maintain surgical equipment, instruments and supplies.
-Apply the principles of perioperative nursing care.
-Apply principles of nursing assistance during surgical procedures
-Discuss nursing considerations for common surgical conditions affecting small animals and equine;
