Academic Year 2021/2022
This module firstly focuses on understanding the principal changes, biomarkers, and adaptations in clinical pathology that are of especial relevance or are distinctive of high performance in the equine athlete. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the relevant theory, illustrative cases, and of the practice of clinical pathology of equine athletes. The main subdisciplines of haematology, clinical biochemistry and cytology will be covered, but also highlights of the laboratory management of samples from the equine athlete will be addressed. The standard and novel, modern technology, methodology, and biomarkers that are specific to assessment of the high performance parameters and that are used at point-of-care, in the veterinary practitioner’s clinic, and in the specialist diagnostic laboratories will be covered. There will be especial focus on the clinical pathology of the organs and systems that are most affected in evolution and performance of the equine athlete, including the haematological, musculoskeletal, and respiratory systems. Additionally, this module will cover morphological pathologi, nutritional and opthalmological aspects of the high-performance athlete. An ocular evaluation of a sport horse with an estimation of visual capabilities is an obvious and vital component in an assessment of the individual animal. It’s basis is the performance of a standard protocol of ophthalmic examination to include orbit, eyelids, globe, intra-ocular structures and ocular movement. Indicators of visual malfunction are explored. The demonstration of an ocular abnormality is followed by a reasonable interpretation of its consequence for current and future vision and its effect on performance. This information must then be communicated to owners and riders. The use of non-prohibited nutritional supplements (including vitamins, minerals, neutraceuticals, herbs, etc.) for performance horses will be evaluated based on scientific evidence, and the nutritional requirements of various types of sporthorses.
