The Walden Vision and my Commitment to Social Change

Walden University is motivated to build a community of professionals with the knowledge and skills to promote positive social change in their society, workplaces, and the community they serve. Its mission is to offer a varied community of career professionals with the opportunity to change themselves as scholar-practitioners and contribute to positive social change. The vision of this institution is to become a distinctively unique modern learning institution offering high-quality knowledge to its graduates, which they can apply to provide immediate solutions to critical societal challenges (Walden University, n.d). Also, Walden University supports positive social change by producing a community of diverse career professionals who can better society. The essay discusses how my academic and professional goals align with the University’s vision, mission, and social change message.

I worked in various healthcare settings as a nurse. However, my experience in the mental health department has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. I observed people from different economic and cultural backgrounds struggling with various mental health issues. I became interested to learn various interventions and treatments for mental illness. Therefore, my personal career goal is to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. To achieve this, I need to attain various academic goals. One of them is to demonstrate advanced assessment skills to complete a full psychiatric evaluation, develop relevant differential diagnoses of various psychiatric disorders, apply evidence-based psychopharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to manage various psychiatric disorders across the lifespan, and foster professional growth and role transition through lifelong learning and self-evaluation. Besides, I am to achieve various professional goals as a psychiatric nurse. One of them is to provide excellent patient-centered care. This will help promote patient experience and satisfaction. Secondly, I will advance my technology skills to be able to offer my patients high-quality and safe care since the healthcare industry is experiencing significant technological developments. Thirdly, I will focus on continuing to increase my knowledge in mental health nursing to update my knowledge and skills. Lastly, I aim to improve my interpersonal skills to enable me to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care to patients.

The institution defines social change as a systematic process that entails the establishment and implementation of ideas, strategies, and events to improve the value, dignity, and development of individuals, populations, organizations, cultures, and societies. I plan to incorporate social change throughout my program of study and in professional practice. One of the strategies I will use include is by supporting diversity and multiculturalism in my education and professional practice (Raewf & Mahmood, 2021). Thus, I will take part in multicultural teams in mental healthcare to provide high-quality care that is congruent to the cultural needs of psychiatric patients from different cultures. Secondly, I will participate in the development of policies and programs for federal, state, and community agencies and advocate for them to promote psychiatric mental health in the community (Choi et al.,2020). Lastly, during my professional practice, I will provide public education to the communities I serve to improve their knowledge about mental health and how to manage them effectively.

My commitment to social change will impact my professional practice and my practicum/field experience positively. It will provide me with an opportunity to utilize my knowledge to address various problems and challenges in my workplace, communities, and society (Alshvang, 2018). Besides, it will allow me to create and implement ideas, strategies, and programs that can promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, organizations, communities, and societies (Romano, 2020).

In conclusion, Walden aims to create a community of professionals with the necessary skills to promote positive social change. This helps promote the improvement of human and social conditions. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I plan to integrate social change into my educational program and professional practice by supporting diversity and multiculturalism, providing health education to communities, participate in the development of policies and programs for federal, state, and community agencies and advocating for them to promote psychiatric mental health in the community.
