Strategic Plan Summary

The change proposal seeks to improve nurse retention in the facility by creating a better working environment and increasing staff satisfaction. The working environment is a major contributor to nurse turnover rates, a major factor that contributes to the nursing shortage in the long-term acute care hospital. The strategic plan will comprise various actions, including increasing interprofessional collaboration, increasing nurse participation in decision making and communication, and a restructuring of nursing shifts to reduce overtime. Studies indicate that interprofessional collaboration increases nurse satisfaction minimizing turnover rates (Baik & Zierler, 2019). This decreases the shortage of nurses in the facilities. A positive link between effective communication in a health care facility and job satisfaction among nurses has been established by research studies (Vermeir et al., 2017). Communication is used as a tool by nurses to voice their concerns to the management, which increases satisfaction as issues affecting the nurses are addressed. Working overtime affects the balance between work and personal life and decreases opportunities for nurses to engage in training and educational programs, and increases workload (Emmanuel et al., 2020). This may lead to nurse turnover due to dissatisfaction.

The changes recommended will be maintained through changes in organizational policies and procedures. This ensures that the changes are maintained in the long run, even with a change in management. The outcome measures will include nurse satisfaction, which will be assessed through questionnaires. Information to be collected will include their views on involvement in major decisions, interprofessional collaboration teams, ideas toward their current workload, and support by the management team. Turnover rates will also be an outcome measure.
