Strategic Plan Assessment: Massachusetts General Hospital

  1. What makes for an effective strategic plan?

A strategic plan is important for organizations, including healthcare facilities. A strategic plan helps to define the purpose of an organization, set a vision for the future, and determine the specific steps that should be taken to achieve the vision (Bryson et al., 2017). Most healthcare facilities understand the importance of a strategic plan and invest significant resources and time in the development of such plans. However, in many instances, strategic plans fail to deliver on their vision. Scholarly studies have estimated that at least 70% of strategic plans fail to actualize their vision (Bryson et al., 2017).

Different characteristics contribute to an effective strategic plan, including the collective ownership of the strategic plan by the senior management in an organization. In most organizations, including healthcare facilities, the senior management members will have their line of responsibility and might not be concerned with the performance and the responsibilities of others. However, in strategic planning, the entire senior management team in a healthcare facility must unite and recognize their collective ownership of the overall vision of the organization and the strategic direction that the organization needs to take (Morciano et al., 2020).

The second characteristic of an effective strategic plan is inclusivity. Some organizations, including healthcare facilities, normally only involve the executive and senior management in the development of a strategic plan, with such a plan being passed down to two different departments. However, such an approach does not work because the different workers in an organization will not be enthusiastic about implementing a strategic plan which does not consider their input. Organizations must therefore promote inclusivity in the development of a strategic plan and allow all employees in an organization to contribute to the development of the plan and come up with different strategies that can help the organization deliver on its vision (Morciano et al., 2020).

The third characteristic of an effective strategic plan is a consideration of operational realities. Most healthcare facilities struggle to acknowledge their weaknesses and challenges. By lacking a candid assessment of the organizational landscape, a strategic plan cannot be effective. Assessing and determining operational realities, including weaknesses and challenges, allows an organization to develop an effective strategic plan (Bryson et al., 2017).

Another important characteristic of an effective strategic plan is assigning specific and tangible actions to individuals across an organization. An effective strategic plan will be extremely detailed, including specific details of individuals who will perform different actions, the resources needed to perform such actions, and a delivery time for different actions (Morciano et al., 2020).

  1. Does your strategic plan connect your mission to your vision?

The strategic plan considered for this assignment is the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) strategic plan. The mission of MGH is to aim to deliver the very best health care in a compassionate and safe environment. The MGH also has a mission to advance care through education and research and to improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities in which they serve (MGH, 2018). On the other hand, the vision of the Massachusetts General Hospital is to promote community health improvement and to eventually ensure health equity across all communities in Massachusetts through teaching, patient care, community health, and research(MGH, 2018). The MGH strategic plan connects the healthcare facilities, vision, and mission by laying out a plan which the healthcare facility can utilize to fulfill their mission and achieve their vision. This includes focusing on the social determinants of health, raising equity in health care delivery, and access to high-quality care in marginalized communities across Massachusetts.

  1. Is your strategic plan realistic?

The Massachusetts General Hospital strategic plan is realistic in that it provides only three priorities in which the healthcare facility should focus on improving for three years. These priorities include social determinants of health, access to care, and race equity (MGH, 2018). The MGH strategic plan is therefore realistic in that the priority areas that are highlighted in the plan can be addressed within three years.

  1. Is your strategic plan integrated in that its strategies align with the defined priorities?

The MGH strategic plan is integrated in that its strategies align with the defined priorities. All the objectives and the strategies that are laid out in the MGH strategic plan are therefore meant to address the three priority areas that are highlighted. The strategies contribute to the objectives, while the objectives contribute to goals that focus on the achievement of priority areas.

The Massachusetts General Hospital strategic plan addresses the various fiscal priorities of the organization. The fiscal priorities of the Massachusetts General Hospital include focusing on promoting health equity which includes targeting marginalized and underserved populations in local communities across Massachusetts. From the strategic plan, it’s evident that the MGH fiscal priorities include prioritizing social determinants of health, access to care, and race equity (MGH, 2018).

  1. Does the strategic plan addresses the fiscal priorities of the organization?

The fiscal priorities of MGH align with the mission and goals of the healthcare facility in that the mission of MGH is to aim to deliver the very best health care in a compassionate and safe environment. The MGH also has a mission to advance care through education and research and to improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities in which they serve (MGH, 2018).
