A. Case Study “Abortion”

You are caring for a client who is contemplating an abortion but has moral distress about doing so.  She tells you her boyfriend is strongly opposed to an abortion. She, however, thinks she is too young to be a mother but feels guilty about having an abortion. Decide how you would use the Bioethical Decision Model to help her resolve the dilemma.

B. Case Study: “Refusal to be Tested for a Genetic Disease”

Kevin is a healthy 18-year-old boy, and he is the son of a 45-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with NF2 (neurofibromatosis type II). NF2 is a rare, autosomal, dominant genetic trait that causes nervous system tumors, most commonly along the 8th cranial nerve (auditory). Children have a 50/50 change of having the gene and most do not experience first symptoms of hearing loss, tinnitus, or balance problems until late teens or early 20’s. Kevin says he does not want to be tested because he does not want to be labeled “sick” by his teammates on the high school varsity basketball team. His parents and doctors recommend he have the test, but he refuses. Using the Bioethical Decision Model from the readings, how would you assist in solving this dilemma?

C. Case Study:  Confidentiality

Mrs. Susan Johnston, is a 23-year-old female who was admitted to hospital for fever and pneumocystis pneumonia. She consented to have an H.I.V. test and when she was informed it was positive, she said she did not want her husband to know about it, because she thinks she got it from a relationship she had with another man before she got married.  Using the Bioethical Decision Model from the readings, how would you assist in resolving this dilemma?

D. Case Study: End of Life

Doreen Smalls, is an 82-year-old female admitted to the intensive care unit with a watershed stroke. She has been artificially ventilated for three days, has received all the appropriate rescue medications and there are no signs of improvement. The physician caring for Ms. Smalls meets with the family and discusses the options related to end of life. Ms. Smalls does not have an advanced directive and her family are arguing about what they believe should be done. Using the Bioethical Decision Model from the readings, how would you assist in resolving this dilemma?
