Description

My reflection relates to my practicum focused on fall prevention in long-term care units. During the seven weeks of my practicum, I spent my time with my preceptor and different stakeholders, including nurse managers, who provided important insights on how to conduct my quality improvement project involving fall prevention. When conducting my quality improvement project involving fall prevention, I also worked closely with the quality improvement group, which was made up of floor managers. During the first weeks of my practicum, I collected and recorded data from both charge nurses and floor managers related to falls in the long-term care units. Subsequently, I involved different stakeholders such as life enhancement leaders, the education department, and nurse managers. I was also involved with the quality improvement department, and nursing staff members in the two targeted long-term care facilities to help me in the implementation of a quality improvement project. During the first seven weeks of my practicum, my main goal was to meet all the stakeholders in the two targeted long-term care units, understand the causes of the challenge of falls, and come up with effective strategies to reduce the rate of falls in the long-term care units.

Feelings

During the seven weeks of my practicum, I experienced a myriad of feelings, including hope, despair, inspiration, concern, and satisfaction. During the first week, I experienced hope and despair, especially when I could not find time to meet the floor managers as such managers had been very busy trying to mitigate the effects of the Covid 19. Eventually, I experienced hope and inspiration after I came up with effective solutions to meet the floor managers and other stakeholders involved in my quality improvement project related to falls. I came up with a solution of meeting floor managers and nurse managers through Skype. Eventually, I experienced the feeling of inspiration and satisfaction when I was able to unite all stakeholders to reduce fall rates in two units in a long-term care facility.

Evaluation

Overall, during the seven weeks of my practicum, my main challenge was scheduling meetings and always finding the right time to meet important stakeholders in the quality improvement project related to reducing falls in two units of the long-term care facility. I was able to meet all stakeholders involved in my project at their convenient time by leveraging the use of technology. By conducting meetings through video conferencing tools such as Skype, I was able to me all the major stakeholders in my quality improvement project. Technology also allowed me to not only save time meeting my stakeholders during my project but also to create flexible schedules that accommodated not only my preceptor but also important stakeholders in my projects, such as floor managers and charge nurses.

Analysis

During my practicum, I have learned the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the implementation of quality improvement projects in healthcare facilities. I have also learned that it’s important for healthcare practitioners to involve all interdisciplinary team members during the implementation of a quality improvement project such as the fall prevention project.

Conclusion

Overall during my practicum, the most important lesson I have learned is to always listen to multiple perspectives of different interested team members in order to resolve issues related to health care environments, such as coming up with the quality improvement plan related to fall prevention in a long-term care facility.

Action plan

In the future, I will rely on an interdisciplinary team in the implementation of all quality improvement projects in healthcare settings.
