In a 1,000-1,250 word essay, summarize two qualitative studies, explain the ways in which the findings might be used in nursing practice, and address ethical considerations associated with the conduct of the study.

You are required to cite a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years, appropriate for the assignment criteria, and relevant to nursing practice.

Qualitative Studies

Background of Study

  1. Summary of studies. Include problem, significance to nursing, purpose, objective, and research question.

The study by Cullen et al (2017) focuses on the problem of food addiction and how it affects people with obesity or overweight people. Food addiction is thought to be associated with the development of obesity and overweight. Food addiction is often misunderstood as to how it affects obese and overweight people. The significance of the research study is to nursing is to provide evidence on the understanding of addiction to food and the impacts on the development of obesity and overweight from the perspective of obese and overweight people. The research purpose was to look into the views of obese and overweight people regarding addiction to food, and its potential impact on the decision to get treatment, stigma, and support of the policies for reducing overeating. The objective of the study is to provide evidence on how the problem of food addiction is understood and its impacts on obese and overweight people. The question that the research seeks to answer is “what are the views of overweight and obese individuals on food addiction and its impact on the decision to seek treatment and support for policies to reduce overeating?”

The study by Lindsay et al (2017) focuses on the beliefs of parents regarding the eating and lifestyle behaviors of their children. The development of obesity especially in young people may be influenced by the parent’s decision and choice of lifestyle behavior for their children. The significance of the study to nursing is the provision of a better understanding of the beliefs and attitudes of parents on the lifestyle behavior of children and how it influences obesity and overweight. The study purposed to investigate Latino fathers’ attitudes, beliefs, and practices that relate to the eating habits, sedentary behaviors, and physical activity of their children. The objective of the research was to provide evidence on the influential role of fathers in their children’s lifestyle behaviors affecting their health. The research tries to answer the research question of “What are the attitude and beliefs of Latino fathers on eating, sedentary behavior, and physical activity of children?”

How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?

  1. Discuss how these two articles will be used to answer your PICOT question.

The article by Cullen et al (2017) provides information on food addiction and how it influences the development of obesity. The type of food that overweight and obese people are addicted to is believed to be a contributing factor in the development of obesity. This relates to the PICOT question of whether diet modification is effective in the reduction of obesity in young adults. The findings from the study will provide evidence on the relationship between food and obesity, which will help answer the research question.

The article by Lindsay et al (2017) provides details on the influence of eating behaviors and other lifestyle behaviors on the development of obesity. It also discusses the influence of fathers on the lifestyle behaviors of children and how it affects their health. This provides sufficient information to help in answering the PICOT question by showing how eating behaviors influence the development of obesity, especially in the young population.

  1. Describe how the interventions and comparison groups in the articles compare to those identified in your PICOT question.

The research study by Cullen et al (2017) involves obese and overweight people who provide their views on food addiction and the impact it has on their obesity or overweight. This group is similar to the population of interest in the PICOT question, which includes obese young adults.

The study by Lindsay et al (2017) involves focus groups of Latino fathers who provide their views on eating habits, physical activity, and sedentary behavior and how they influence the development of obesity. The population group is different from the groups in the PICOT question as it includes young adults with obesity, while the research group includes random fathers selected to provide their views on lifestyle behaviors and obesity. The group however provides information on the relationship between diet and obesity.

Method of Study:

  1. State the methods of the two articles you are comparing and describe how they are different.

The research study by Cullen et al (2017) used a qualitative research design. The method of data collection involved the use of semi-structured interviews which helped gather the views of the participants regarding food addiction.

The Study by Lindsay et al (2017) used a qualitative research design and involved the use of discussions by focus groups for data collection.

  1. Consider the methods you identified in your chosen articles and state one benefit and one limitation of each method.

One benefit of qualitative research is that it allows participants to freely express themselves when providing data. This is beneficial, especially to researchers that seek to explore the perceptions of the participants regarding a particular topic. The limitation of a qualitative design is that it lacks statistical representation, which means the responses given by the participants are not measured.

The benefit of using focus groups in research is that they provide a better understanding of the participants. They help the researcher uncover the attitudes and beliefs of the participants regarding a particular topic. Focus groups are appropriate for studies that seek to explore the attitudes and beliefs of participants. The limitation of focus groups is the possibility that participants may not provide honest opinions, and it increases biases in responses provided. This can lead to incorrect findings and conclusions of the study.
