The module is a clinical teaching module carried out over two trimesters. This is necessary to achieve access to relevant facilities, support and materials. Credits are obtained at the end of the second trimester once successful assessment is completed. This module prepares clinical psychologists in training to practice in the field of intellectual disability. The approach taken is developmental and contextual. The aim is to equip psychologists with the knowledge and skills to offer services to people with intellectual disabilities across the lifespan. There is also a focus on the social context within which services are offered to people with intellectual disabilities, with due regard to clients’ families and relevant agencies, service providers and social systems. Topics covered include:

• Conceptual frameworks
Diagnosis, classification and epidemiology of disabilities
Influences on development and quality of life across the lifecycle
• Assessment frameworks
Evaluation of cognitive abilities, adaptive behaviour and quality of life in people with disabilities across the life-span.
Interviewing and report writing.

Person centred planning, inclusion, integration and advocacy.
Applied behaviour analysis.
