The module is a clinical teaching module carried out over two trimesters. This is necessary to achieve access to relevant facilities, support and materials. Credits are obtained at the end of the second trimester once successful assessment is completed.
This module provides an overview of the psychological literature on common problems of childhood and adolescence in the following areas:
• Child development
• Influences on problem development
• Classification, epidemiology and treatment effectiveness
• Stages of the consultation process
• Sleep problems
• Elimination problems
• Disabilities in children
• Conduct problems
• ADHD
• Anxiety problems
• Childhood depression
• Somatic complaints
• Drug abuse
• Child protection, child abuse and neglect
For each clinical problem or topic clinical features, diagnosis, classification, epidemiology, theoretical frameworks, assessment, formulation, treatment, prevention and professional issues are addressed. The course also provides a training in basic clinical practice skills for interviewing children, adolescents and parents and conducting routine psychological interventions. Active learning techniques including role-play and video feedback are employed in this course. The course also provides an introduction to assessment and psychometric testing of children and adolescents.
