PSY40310 Psychology Writing Group
Academic Year 2021/2022
This is a skills based module designed to facilitate and support graduate research students in the development of their academic writing skills. The focus of the module is on writing an article for a peer reviewed publication. Students identify their own writing projects and a suitable journal. Each written project is peer reviewed within the group and all students are required to submit at least one completed draft article over the course of the academic year and to review in writing all articles submitted to the group. The group meets on the last Wednesday of every month from 2.00 to 4.00 with the first meeting on Wednesday September 29th 2021 in the Newman Building. Because of the specific focus on the skills required to write a journal article this module is not suitable for first year graduate students. Students are strongly advised to contact Eilis Hennessy (firstname.lastname@example.org) to discuss whether or not the module would suit their current area of research before they register for the module. They should also speak to their research supervisor about identifying a suitable writing project.
On completion of this module students should be able to: Identify an academic writing task appropriate to the current stage of their graduate career; Write an article for publication grounded within their area of graduate research; Make an informed choice about where to submit their writing for publication; Use peer review to adapt and rewrite a journal article; Critically review journal articles in the area of psychological science; Provide constructive feedback on journal articles in the area of psychological science.
Indicative Module Content:
This is a skills based module and therefore the specific content varies depending on the topics of the journal articles submitted for review, however, the articles reviewed will be in the subject area of psychology and cognate disciplines.
