PICOT Question

Considering the problem of staffing shortages in healthcare facilities, one of the approaches that have been suggested as an effective strategy to deal with nursing shortages is the provision of more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses. Healthcare facilities, especially in marginalized communities, have been struggling with high turnover rates as a result of a lack of prospects for nurses and heavy workloads (Marć et al., 2018). Providing an opportunity for nurses who work with marginalized communities to advance their careers and assume leadership positions can play a significant role in helping to boost retention and eventually improve the healthcare outcomes of such communities (Rosenberg, 2019).

The ideal picot question to address the problem of nursing shortages in marginalized communities would be: Among marginalized communities (P), does providing more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses (I)compared to not providing opportunities for career advancement and leadership(C) reduce nursing shortages (O) after a period of five years(T)?

The population of interest is marginalized communities who are significantly underserved and struggle to access healthcare services across the US. On the other hand, the ideal nursing intervention would be for healthcare facilities to provide more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses. Providing opportunities for career development and growth can play a significant role in helping to boost the retention of nurses, especially those serving marginalized communities. The comparison group in the picot question is not providing opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses. The expected outcomes from the picot question would be reduced nursing shortages and improved health outcomes in marginalized communities that would have access to more healthcare services due. Finally, a project involving providing more opportunities for career advancement among nurses and leadership to improve retention and eventually boost the health outcomes of marginalized communities would be five years.

Evidence-based Solution

Providing more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses is an evidence-based solution towards reducing staff shortages in healthcare facilities. Numerous scholarly sources indicate that healthcare facilities that provide more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses significantly improve employee retention and eventually address the challenge of nursing shortages (Shah et al., 2021).

Nursing Intervention

The nursing intervention, which includes providing more opportunities for career advancement and leadership for nurses, provides more opportunities for nurses to gain more knowledge and become better in their practice. Nurses who are provided with continuing education opportunities are more likely to provide high-quality care to patients (Drennan & Ross, 2019).

Patient Care

Providing an opportunity to advance careers and leadership for nurses positively impacts patient care. This is because as nurses advance their careers, they gain more knowledge and experience in providing quality healthcare services to patients. Such nurses are more likely to assure patients of the best outcomes. Through continuous education, nurses are able to incorporate evidence-based practices and provide quality health care services to patients (Mlambo et al., 2021).

Health Care Agency

Providing an opportunity for nurses to advance their careers and to assume leadership positions has a positive impact on health care agencies. Healthcare agencies are able to save on recruitment costs while improving the quality of healthcare services they provide to patients (Mlambo et al., 2021).

Nursing Practice

Providing an opportunity for nurses to advance their careers and assume leadership positions contributes positively to nursing practice. Through continuous education and career advancement and the provision of more leadership positions to nurses, the nursing discipline therefore grows and expands (Mlambo et al., 2021).
