Criteria

The priority area is reducing fall rates in older people. Falls are the major cause of morbidity among elder adults. Research shows that falls have caused deaths, unintended injuries, and trauma admissions. It is important to prevent fall rates to protect to reduce morbidity-related deaths in older adults. Research shows that fall morbidity rates are high, and thus, there is a need to tackle the problem.

Clinical Nursing Practice Problem

Select and identify ONLY one quality or safety clinical priority area from the assignment guidelines practice scenario. Summarize why you believe the nursing practice problem/issue is the most important.  Summarize your rationale (why) for choosing the problem.

Clinical Nursing

PICOT Question

Using the NR439 Guide for Writing PICOT Questions and Examples located in the assignment guidelines, write out your PICOT question. Include the PICOT letters in your question.

Are evidence-based fall practices more effective compared to usual prevention interventions in reducing fall rates among older patients in a care setting in a three-months intervention program?
Define PICOT Elements

Define each of the PICOT elements from your question above.

P– (patient population/patients of interest): older patients in a care setting

I– (Intervention): evidence-based fall practices

C– (Comparison): usual fall prevention interventions

O– (Measurable outcome): reducing fall rates

T– (Time frame in months): three months intervention program

Evidence Retrieval Process and Summary

Using only the Chamberlain College of Nursing library:

(1) Locate evidence that is relevant to your chosen nursing practice problem.  Explain how you believe the evidence is relevant to your chosen nursing practice problem.

(2) Explain why you chose the evidence

(3) Provides a complete APA reference to the evidence (must include authors, year, title of the evidence, title of the resource)

(4) Evidence must be published within the last 10 years

(5) Provides the permalink

Translating evidence‐based falls prevention into clinical practice in nursing facilities: Results and lessons from a quality improvement collaborative. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society54(9), 1414-1418.

Colón‐Emeric et al. (2006) discuss the effectiveness of care after the application of evidence-fall reduction improvement programs in nursing facilities. This source is important as it directly relates to the topic of falls. While the source had many barriers that made it difficult to observe the effectiveness of evidence-based practices in reducing falls, it suggests that interdisciplinary collaboration ought to be developed to help reduce falls. Colón‐Emeric et al. (2006) are important in my chosen problem as it exposes the need to implement evidence-based practice in reducing fall rates.

Implications of the Evidence

Summarize what you learned from the evidence. Summarize why you believe the nursing evidence-based practice committee should focus their next research project on the nursing practice problem.

I learned that while evidence-based practices could be important in reducing fall rates, there are numerous challenges that are experienced in implementing such initiatives. There is a need to develop interventions that improve interdisciplinary collaboration. Identifying complex intervention packages may be needed to make evidence-based practice more effective in reducing falls.
