PICOT Question

A PICOT question has five main elements, including the population of concern, the intervention, comparison with a control program or condition, the expected outcome, and the time to achieve the particular outcome. The question addresses the key issue or problem being experienced by the population to improve the issue. The following is the PICOT question to be discussed in this paper.

Among nurses experiencing burnout (P), would the extensive implementation of stress management, coping techniques, and organizational focus on staff mental health (I) compare to lack of attention (C) improve the issue of the nursing shortage and produce better patient care and outcomes (0)?

The problem found in the PICOT is nurse burnout which is majorly contributed by the nurse-shortage factor. Nurse burnout can be defined as the state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion due to work-related stressors, including long working hours, high levels of pressure, and poor outcomes on patient care (Greenwood, 2022). This is a relevant study problem because the impact of nurse burnout is experienced through negative patient outcomes. A study by Garcia et al. (2019) on the impact of nurse burnout on patient safety indicated that high levels of nurse burnout affect the productivity of the nurses and lead to poor quality of care and patient safety outcomes.

Nurse burnout leads to risk factors such as cynicism, hopelessness, and depression, among other health-related conditions. The problem requires evidence-based solutions in improving the quality of the nurses’ health in impacting the quality and safety of the care they deliver. The factors of hopelessness, depression, and general body fatigue in the study should be controlled when nurse burnout is inevitable. This shows that an evidence-based study should be conducted to evaluate whether some interventions can help in reducing the symptoms of nurse burnout that influence the patient outcome.

The intervention stated in the PICOT question is stress management program and education on situational coping techniques. This nursing intervention is related to the problem of nurse burnout since the burnout factor causes depressive symptoms that require to be controlled. Positive management of stress and depression through psychiatry and coping skills improve general health. Controlling the depressive and mental issues through the intervention would thus reduce the impact of nurse burnout in the workplace.

Patient care is the primary role of nurses, and for the healthcare providers to effectively deliver their services, they need to be in their right mental and physical condition. The nurse burnout factor affects the morale, health, and productivity of the healthcare providers, and thus the problem is connected with the patient care outcome. Baier et al. (2018) note that nurse burnout contributes to numerous medication and treatment errors, indicating that controlling nurse burnout issues can effectively lead to reduced medication and treatment errors in the healthcare environment.

Hospitals are the most common places where nurses experience long-working hours and adverse working environments that contribute to nursing burnout. Some situations are inevitable such as increased workload over the ability of the healthcare providers. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the high demand for healthcare in the care facilities, and thus nurse burnout was unavoidable. The main concern is thus on how to improve the wellbeing of nurses in such conditions of burnout in maintaining a positive patient outcome. Nursing practice is guided by the safety and effectiveness of the care processes and is thus impacted by the nurse burnout condition. The research questions aim to provide nurses and administrators in dealing with the impact of nurse burnout, including fatigue and depression, in improving the quality of patient care and safety.
