Personal Experience

Children are molded by the family culture into which they are born. The family culture can influence one’s attitudes, thinking, and behavior during adulthood, whether or not those individuals are aware of such influence. For instance, i was born i a religious family. My parents trained various spiritual practices, which influenced my thinking and behavior in adulthood. For example, they could pray for my siblings and me for healing whenever we were sick. Therefore, I have embraced this family culture throughout my life. However, later I realized some people do not believe in spirituality like in my family. Some individuals thought that one could only get healed by receiving medical care from a healthcare professional. Also, during my clinical rotations, I worked in a diverse healthcare setting, where I encountered various patients who believed in different cultural beliefs and practices like traditional medicine.

I changed my way of thinking after becoming a nursing student. Also, I worked in a diverse healthcare organization where I encountered people with diverse cultural beliefs and values. I learned to accept other people’s diverse cultural beliefs, values, and practices in this healthcare organization.

I have now learnt that our diverse cultural beliefs, values, and practices influence our understanding of the nursing practice. Therefore, I will use this information in clinical practice by allowing patients to practice their cultural practices to enhance their satisfaction. However, in case I realize particular patients and families embrace cultural practices that may be harmful to the patient or refuse to receive medical care recommended by healthcare professionals, I will advise them to accept the medical care without coercing them. Besides, I will give them room to practice their cultural practices without causing harm to the patient to enhance patient safety.
