PATH40030 Journal and Ethical Review

This module is core for stage 4 of the honours BSc degrees in Biomedical Health and Life Sciences. Students are required to attend a weekly Journal and ethical review group discussion session for the course of 12 weeks of their research project. In the first three weeks students will learn how to critically review a published paper and assess its statistical and experimental approach and impact on the research area as well as ethical issues related to human research. They will also learn the basic principles of ethics and issues associated with the use of humans for research with the appropriate approaches being identified.
Each week a selected student will lead the review of a paper from their research area, presenting the key findings, relevance to the literature and issues related to the paper. Each participating student in the Journal club session will write a short report on the issues related to the paper presented and discussed.
Each week a selected student will also lead the review of the ethical issues associated with their research project or related area and how these are being addressed in their research project.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Perform a literature search on the specific research topic.
2. Present, critically analyse and discuss a scientific paper as part of a Journal club.
3. Write a critical overview of a paper.
4. Analyse and critically-evaluate the ethical issues related to their research project.
