With the introduction of huge amounts of technology and electronic documentation, it seems that we are moving further from providing hands-on nursing care to patients. How can we, as nurses, apply nursing informatics standards to personalize care for patients? Give some examples of how you have seen technology used to personalize care.

The nursing informatics field integrates the nursing science with many information and systematic sciences to classify, define, manage and communicate wisdom and information in the nursing practice (ANA n.d.). Nursing informatics standards help guarantee that the health-specific applications applied by the patients, clinicians, and citizens are safe, functioning, and suitable for their purpose. Usually, they support the interoperability between the systems for information communicated electronically to be precisely understood and applied for decision-making, care continuousness, and other significant purposes.

We, as nurses, can use nursing informatics standards to personalize patient care by identifying the patients at high risk for severe conditions and taking preventive steps early (Adelphi University 2020). The standards automated alerts minimalize the chance for medical errors by warning of possible dangers like patient’s allergies or hazardous drug interactions. As well, with the help of these standards, the ability to track the staffing, communication, and workflow helps us identify the areas where the current processes may be improved.

One example of technology I have seen used in my practice is endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). This is a procedure using sound waves called ultrasound during the endoscopic technique to look at the gastrointestinal tract wall.  This particular technique allowed the physician to check invisible organs and structures during the gastrointestinal endoscopy, like layers of the gastrointestinal tract wall, liver, lymph nodes, pancreas, and bile ducts. Another technology I saw used is I-Scan technology that increases diagnostic accuracy by showing fine facts of GI mucosa (Akarsu & Akarsu 2018).  It uses the post-image acquisition software having real-time mapping technology fixed in the endoscopic processor. Providers used this technology to assess bids of I-scan technology in the clinical endoscopic practice.
