“The future of nursing: Leading change, Advancing Health,” is a report published by the Institute of Medicine in 2010. A committee consisting of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine was formed in 2008 and was tasked with developing a report that would recommend an actionable blueprint for the future of the nursing industry, including policy changes at national and institutional levels. The committee developed four major recommendations that should guide the future of nursing, including; nurses should be allowed to practice to the full extent of their education and training. The nursing workforce constitutes the largest proportion of healthcare providers; however, their potential is limited due to practice regulations in different states. Having the nurses practice to the full extent of their practice would help solve major challenges such as physician shortages and increased cost of care (The national Academies, 2021).
The education system should be improved to ensure that nurses can achieve higher education levels, the nursing field is constantly advancing, and therefore nurses need to keep on learning to ensure they can effectively handle the future healthcare demands. This can only be achieved the education system is improved to support further studies for nurses. The committee also recommended the development of the information infrastructure in healthcare to support effective work planning and policymaking. The advancement of the nursing industry and healthcare, in general, can only be achieved through adequate planning, which relies on the quality of data gathered, therefore the need to improve information infrastructure. Another recommendation was that nurses need to be full partners with other care providers such as physicians. Achieving a transformed healthcare system will require the participation of all care providers at the leadership level, including nurse leaders (The national Academies, 2021).
The report’s impact on the nursing profession is that it has contributed to several developments, such as full practice authority in several states, which increases nursing autonomy in the provision of care. It has also led to increased funding to support nursing education, especially those pursuing higher degrees and masters nursing programs. The report has also contributed to the recognition of nurse leadership roles in the advancement of healthcare delivery. The impact on quality for consumers includes improved faster delivery of care services. In states where nurses are allowed full practice authority, consumers have faster access to care as they do not have to wait long to see a physician. Consumers can access quality care services at relatively lower costs, as nurses are less expensive than physicians.
