The CPD module is designed to provide students with the theoretical foundation and clinical practice skills for nursing the specialised patient group of persons experiencing spinal column/spinal cord Injury. The module aims to provide the student with the specialist theoretical knowledge which underpins the holistic nursing management of the patient experiencing a spinal column/ spinal cord injury across the continuum of care including the initial acute management and rehabilitation. The module also aims to facilitate the student to develop their professional role with emphasis on patient centred education and discharge planning.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student will:
1. Analyse the anatomical and physiological effects of spinal column/ spinal cord Injury and disease on the patient.
2. Demonstrate the ability to provide holistic nursing care, drawing on best evidence, practice guidelines and national policy, across the continuum of spinal column/spinal cord injury care.
3. Examine the indicators of readiness to engage with patient education and distinguish the evidence-based patient education.
4. Develop an individualised patient education programme and holistic discharge care plan collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team and the patient.
5. Demonstrate progression of professional nursing role and competence incorporating the agreed core values of compassion, care and commitment and their associated behaviours.
