This module introduces the students to models of psychosocial care pertinent to those with severe and enduring mental illness. A range of therapies are introduced including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, CBT, Occupational Therapy, Mindfulness, Supported socialization, Budgeting skills, Spirituality and family-based interventions.
Classes are interactive; students get to practice, discuss and explore some skills and therapies. The module is strongly linked to clinical practice exposure. The student will critically appraise the role of the nurse at staff nurse, specialist/advanced practice levels in designing, delivering and evaluating evidence-based psychosocial interventions with service-users with enduring mental health needs.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
• Critically detail the assessment, holistic interventions, planning, and evaluation of care for individuals with severe and enduring mental illness
• Critically appraise the role of specific therapies with people who experience severe and enduring mental health difficulties with reference to the literature and clinical experience
• Critically discuss the role of socialization with people who experience severe and enduring mental health difficulties
