NMHS32170 Pharmacology for Nurse-Midwife Prescribing.

This module introduces student prescribers to the core discipline of Pharmacology. The initial block of lectures covers the concepts of mechanism of drug action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics and pharmacovigilance. The module then proceeds to cover the principal classes of drugs employed clinically to treat diseases in the major body systems. Lectures are face-to-face with worked case examples built into some lectures. Lecture time is allocated for exam preparation. Students are directed to key learning resources and are expected to read broadly and research around key topics.
On completion of this module students should be able to:
State the general principles of drug action, pharmacodynamics pharmacotherapeutics pharmacokinetics and pharmacovigilance
Describe the pathogenic mechanism that underlies the specific diseases covered
Discuss the pharmacology of the principal classes of drugs acting on major body systems including adverse reactions and interventions
