This aim of this module is to provide registered general nurses with the knowledge, skills and clinical competence to practice safely and competently within their scope of practice in the context of oncology nursing. The module is underpinned by national standards including: National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), & Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Students will be currently employed in one of two allied areas of Oncology Haematology Day Unit and St Vincent’s Ward and will undertake clinical placements in the remaining clinical area within the duration of the module.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module the student will:
1. Critically discuss the pathophysiology of typical oncology conditions and the aetiological factors which contribute to the development of these diseases.
2. Evaluate the holistic assessment, management and evaluation of nursing care of the patient with cancer.
3. Distinguish the key oncological emergencies, including the management of adverse effects and toxicities.
4. Demonstrate the ability to safely administer and handle chemotherapy drugs to ensure the safety of patients, carers & the environment.
5.Explore the physical, social and psychological needs of patients and families with cancer and how these are assessed by the multi-disciplinary team
