This module is designed to provide students with the theoretical foundation and clinical practice skills for entry into critical care nursing practice. The module aims to facilitate students’ understanding of the principles of homeostatic maintenance including acid-base balance, fluid and electrolyte balance, intravenous fluid management; the implementation and management of therapeutic technologies including oxygen therapy, artificial airways, mechanical invasive and non-invasive ventilation, pharmacology and other haemodynamic devices pertaining to their clinical speciality. The module also aims to facilitate the student in their continued professional development, within their specific role as a critical care nurse, with particular emphasis on patient-centeredness, patient safety, professional accountability and the requirement for effective communication inclusive of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and their families.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student will:
1. Extend prior knowledge of applied clinical physiology and integrate into the examination of alterations in physiology and pathophysiology pertinent to critically ill patients to allow analysis of patient assessment findings and to differentiate normal, variations of normal and abnormal findings.
2. Demonstrate comprehensive theoretical knowledge of the core principles that underpin nursing practice in the Intensive Care Unit and integrate into the clinical nursing practice of the critically ill patient.
3. Demonstrate the ability to analyse and critique best practice guidelines that underpins the nursing care of the critically ill patient.
4. Integrate theoretical knowledge into the appropriate selection, planning and prioritisation of care for the critically ill patient.
5. Utilise the principles of effective communication, patient safety and professional accountably in the provision of patient centred care.
