This module aims to help you understand how the human body maintains health. It introduces you to scientific principles in the areas of anatomy and physiology. Learning will focus on the organisation of the human body (concepts of cells and their environment), homeostasis, protection, communication, perfusion (cardiovascular and respiratory system), hydration, nutrition, metabolism and reproduction. The module will provide you with the grounding and understanding of the normal structure and function of the human body over the course of the lifespan and the basis to understand the changes that occur in altered health.

The module is underpinned by the philosophy that Anatomy and Physiology is a critical element for nursing competency.

Learning Outcomes:

a) Describe the cellular and tissue organisation of the human body.
b) Explain the homeostatic processes that maintain the stability of the internal environment
c) Describe the components and characteristics of immunity and the role of the lymphatic system in defense.
d) Describe the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems.
e) Explain the structure and function of the cardiopulmonary system in maintaining healthy perfusion.
f) Describe how the body maintains fluid and electrolyte balance.
g) Describe the structure and function of the gastrointestinal system and outline the basic processes of metabolism.

Indicative Module Content:

Firstly, we will discuss why the human body is the way it is. Content includes the chemical basis of life, cell structure and function, tissues and organs. In Homeostasis we examine the role of the autonomic and endocrine system in maintaining homeostasis of key variables and use temperature regulation as an exemplar. We will then examine the cellular, lymphatic and chemical immune responses of the body to injury. In Perfusion we will examine factors affecting cardiac dynamics and the cardiovascular structure and function. The skill of measuring and recording BP will be included. The anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system across the lifespan will then be studied. In Reproduction we will examine the structure and function of male and female reproductive systems and sexual development across the lifespan.
We will move on to discuss the importance of body water and composition and mechanisms to maintain fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. In the Gastrointestinal system we will examine nutrition and macro and micro-nutrients. The Anatomy and physiology of the GIT and cell metabolism will be presented.
