This module aims to introduce the student to the knowledge and skills underpinning the nursing care of persons requiring surgery. This module builds on modules in Autumn and clinical experience. It focuses on aspects of clinical nursing care relating to admission of a patient for surgery, patient assessment, pre-operative preparation, immediate post-operative care and discharge planning. It is planned that lectures and practical sessions will be face-to-face.

Learning Outcomes:

•Demonstrate an understanding of the surgical patient’s journey from admission to discharge.
•Discuss roles and responsibilities of the nurse in relation to aspects of peri-operative care relating to asepsis and surgical wound management.
•Become familiar with principles of post-operative management of the surgical patient, for example; pain management, mobility and nutrition.
•Apply principles of care planning to patients undergoing surgery.
•Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the nurse in relation to fostering a therapeutic relationship with patients requiring surgery.
•Discuss key aspects of care relating to death and dying.
