Mission and Vision Statements

An organization’s mission describes its core purpose. In partnership with the organization’s vision, which communicates a future-focused direction, the mission provides a basis for planning and decision making at all levels of the organization. For this Discussion, you compare mission and vision statements from multiple organizations and consider how these statements relate to planning.

To prepare:

Review the information related to the planning hierarchy and mission and vision statements in this week’s Learning Resources.

Research the mission and vision statements of three different types of organizations: a for-profit healthcare organization, a not-for-profit healthcare organization, and an organization outside of healthcare. As you examine the organizations’ mission and vision statements, consider the following:

How effectively do the mission statements articulate the organization’s purpose?
How effectively do the vision statements reflect future aims?
Do the mission and vision statements convey who (which groups) the organizations serve? Do they indicate obligations to various stakeholders?
Are the statements an appropriate length?
What do you glean about how leaders in healthcare and in other industries envision and convey mission and vision?
What do you discern about the interdisciplinary nature of crafting mission and vision statements by looking across organizations, including those outside of healthcare?
Identify key insights you have gained by comparing the mission and vision statements of these three organizations.
Consider how an organization’s mission and vision relate to the planning hierarchy. For each organization you have selected, think about how the mission and vision could or should influence planning. What elements of each mission and vision stand out as especially significant?
By Day 3
Post a comparison of the mission and vision statements of the three organizations selected. Explain how specific elements of each organization’s mission and vision statements might inform planning in that organization. Include references/links for the organizations’ mission and vision statements in your post.

Mission and Vision Statements

The three organizations under review are American Healthcare Association (AHA) (not-for-profit), Tenet Health (for-profit), and Conservation International (non-healthcare). Table 1 shows the three organizations’ mission and vision statements.

Mission “To advance the health of all individuals and communities. The AHA leads, represents and serves hospitals, health systems and other related organizations that are accountable to communities and committed to equitable care and health improvement for all.” (AHA, n.d.) “To provide quality, compassionate care in the communities we serve. Creating an ethos of good health, wellness and responsibility is central to our mission and an everyday commitment to our neighbors and families.” (Tenet Health, n.d.) “Building upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, Conservation International empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, our global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity.” (Conservation International, n.d.)
Vision “A just society of healthy communities, where all individuals reach their highest potential for health.” (AHA, n.d.) “To consistently deliver the right care, in the right place, at the right time and to be a premier organization to work, where patient care and saving lives remain our focus.” (Tenet Health, n.d.) “We imagine a healthy, prosperous world in which societies are forever committed to caring for and valuing nature, for the long-term benefit of people and all life on Earth” (Conservation International, n.d.)

Table 1: Mission and Vision Statements

The three mission statements define the organizations’ purpose, providing an outsider with a clear image of what the organizations do. Similarly, the three organizations’ vision statements reflect the future organizational and community status that each group seeks to establish. The mission and vision statements do not identify specific groups, instead adopting a universal outlook to the human and non-human communities the organizations serve. However, AHA’s mission statement identifies specific stakeholders (hospitals, health systems, etc.), but none of the other two organizations do. All statements are concise (below fifty words), making them of appropriate length.

The three organizations rely on their mission and vision statements for planning. Thus, they will have significant variations in their operations and long-term strategies. For instance, AHA’s leadership is likely to focus on ways of bridging healthcare inequalities. Hence, the organization will focus more on underserved populations and healthcare systems. It will also engage in patient empowerment to allow all people to attain optimal well-being. Meanwhile, Tenet Health’s short-term and strategic planning will entail delivering high-quality care to the clientele. The organization’s mission and vision statements will steer the leadership towards establishing care quality metrics, including patient safety and cultural inclusivity. Lastly, Conservation International’s statements suggest a robust plan. The organization’s leadership must prepare to engage in extensive research to find viable solutions to environmental problems. They must also plan for community engagement, including education and financial empowerment, to enable them to begin and maintain sustainable practices. Furthermore, the organization must plan to collaborate with other entities, including governments, to ensure that the legal and social framework in specific communities supports their agenda. Therefore, the differences in the organizations’ mission and vision statements guide them to varying planning proposals and actions.
