The mid-range theory congruent with Calvin’s situation is that of self-care. Although the initial article of self-care is based on patients with Heart failure (HF), similar patterns are noticed in Calvin’s description of what his current symptoms are.  He describes his current health related problems as wheezing, chest-tightness and having to use his inhaler more frequently than usual. Making a change in his usual self-care routine for his chronic illness of asthma is prudent in his overall health (Jaarsma et al., 2017). Using this article about self-care of Chronic illness, related factors of Calvin’s self care routine can be recognized so that his behaviors can be hones to make his self-care interventions more successful in treating his asthma (Jaarsma et al.,2017). From Calvin’s scenario, it can be deduced that since he is having an asthma exacerbation, he needs to avoid being around his grandmothers until his asthma is under control. This is supported by the behavioral economics mentioned in the article by Jaarsma et al. Using this strategy, his effective existing patterns of self-care can be encouraged such as using his inhaler and going to the ER when needed. Another area to be investigated is to find out why Calvin is not using his antihistamines as suggested. Some of the factors that affect decisions made about self-care include knowledge, experience and skills (Jaarsma et al.). It is necessary to find out if there is a knowledge deficit causing him to not use it or if his lack of use is related to a cultural belief or value. Once the cause is found, teaching can be done to enhance Calvin’s management of his asthma.
Another article that could be applied to Calvin’s case is A cancer specific middle-range theory of symptom self-care management: A theory synthesis. This article talks about several factors that can help with self-management of cancer. These factors can be applied to Calvin’s management of his asthma. The article introduces the idea of a relationship existing between self- care management behavior and self-regulation skills. It states that “people with high levels of self-regulation skills and abilities are more probably to adhere to symptom self-care management behaviours compared with those with low levels of self-regulation skills and abilities. Better adherence to symptom self-care management behaviours may lead to a better control of the symptom experience” (Baydoun et al., 2018). This article showed that when were taught to monitor their own symptoms, they felt empowered to better comply with recommended self-care behaviors and symptom control. This can be applied in Calvin’s case by helping him understand that he has asthma and helping him recognize what is considered as a asthma attack such as the wheezing and chest-tightness he has been experiencing. By doing so, Calvin will be able to understand what is happening to him and also understand what his prescribed treatments are for. This way he can feel empowered to choose the right medications depending on the symptoms he is experiencing.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to the discussion. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your post. I will only make few remarks in addition to what you already have in place. To start briefly on the main reason, a mid-range theory of self-care is appropriate for Calvin’s asthma condition. Calvin’s disease can also be understood and managed based on the article of Integrating symptoms into the Middle-Range Theory of Self-Care of Chronic Illness.  The mid-range theory of self-care for chronic illness contributes significantly to managing self-care behaviors by describing the process among various people and identifying distressing factors (Riegel et al., 2019).

Self-care is essential in managing chronic illnesses. The mid-range theory of self-care for chronic disease is the main essence of the mid-range theory of self-care for chronic disease is to show how the patient will handle their situation with the guidance they are being offered at the healthcare facilities. Self-care determines various outcomes in clinic setup and patients of prolonged disease (Riegel et al., 2019). Therefore, those patients who take part effectively in self-care management of their condition have higher chances of quality life, reduced expenses on hospitalization, and reduced chances of dying

Calvin’s reason for not using his antihistamines is a significant alarming situation that needs checking. The drugs will help determine the behavioral change based on the progress of the symptoms, which is necessary for monitoring and giving appropriate directives for self-care management of his behaviors. For instance, if he takes the drugs and the symptoms increase, he can have a different control tactic, such as changing his diet, prescription, or refer a new clinician (Riegel et al., 2019).

In addition to Calvin’s condition, it is essential to refer to this article as well. The article focuses primarily on strategies on how a patient suffering from chronic diseases can handle the situation without overburdening their finances or families. It allows appreciating self-care and taking much consideration in striving effortlessly to manage oneself. The central theme is focusing on self-care behavior. Based on this, I am sure that Calvin will manage his health condition and choose the appropriate treatment for him with time.
