Academic Year 2021/2022

Students attend the weekly psychiatric case conference held at St Vincent’s University Hospital where, regularly, a patient is interviewed in the presence of a broad group of mental health professionals. The interview itself, the psychiatric diagnosis, including the psychoanalytic opinion, and the treatment plan will inform the seminar held immediately afterwards.

This is a must-pass module for the programme. In other words, a student cannot complete the MSc without passing this module regardless of grades across all other modules.

Learning Outcomes:

Students should be in a position to: 1) Demonstrate an understanding of the psychiatric diagnostics of mental disorders 2) Discuss the contribution of a psychoanalytic formulation and the implications of same for the patient’s treatment 3) Identify a psychoanalytic intervention which might respond to an account of a patient 4) Demonstrate fluency in writing up and evaluating case presentation reports
