MDCS40820 Supervision of Clinical Practice Part II
Academic Year 2021/2022
The supervision of ongoing clinical practice takes place in small groups in order to offer students a highly focused training in the technique and practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Students present their case material weekly in rotation for peer and tutor supervision. Within this intimate group context, students are encouraged, directed and supported in sustaining therapeutic work – ideally carried over from first year – with the same patient or group of patients. The evolving complexity of ethical and theoretical questions around the direction of the treatment as these relate to interpretation, transference etc are privileged. Selected papers on metapsychology provide the theoretical prism through which clinical situations are viewed.
This is a must-pass module for the programme. In other words, a student cannot complete the MSc without passing this module regardless of grades across all other modules.
The student will be able to:1) Demonstrate a sound understanding of the tenets of psychoanalytic technique 2) Develop proficiency in oral presentation 3) Attend to and engage in an informed and supportive critique of the clinical work of peers 4) Demonstrate a capacity to work therapeutically with patients following psychoanalytic principles 5) Submit a clinical paper reflective of psychoanalytic practice.
