MDCS40490 Psychoanalytic Theory

This module provides a systematic understanding of psychoanalytic theory from classical to contemporary psychoanalysis. This includes the study of Freud’s theory of the unconscious with particular emphasis on dreams, repression and other defences. The work of Melanie Klein will be covered with focus on the processes of projection and projective identification and in relation to her theory of envy and reparation. There will be a systematic coverage of object relations theory with emphasis on Winnicott’s position in relation to the early maternal relationship and processes of holding, mirroring and play and the development of the true and false self. Self psychology will be studied with reference to Kernberg’s theories on borderline conditions and pathological narcissism.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts of psychoanalytic theory. 2. Locate psychoanalytic theory in its historical, methodological and conceptual context. 3. Understand the core principles of psychic development from infancy to death and their relevance for group psychotherapy.
