This is a core module in the Diploma in Military Medical Care and is open only to nominees of the Defence Forces.
This module will introduce the student to occupational health roles in the military workplace. Commencing with an introduction to the history of occupational medicine, the module will focus on the functions of the Occupational Health Unit. The Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 / Exemptions to the Act & Regulations will form the basis for a range of topics, to include Fitness for Duty, Ethics, Confidentiality and Documentation.
Students will undertake skills training related to a range of planned clinical and occupational health functions carried out at various unit levels within the Defence Forces.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students should demonstrate an understanding of the structures and role of the Occupational Health Unit within the Defence Forces.
Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles underpinning anthrometry, audiometry, spirometry, visual acuity testing and colour vision testing.
The student will have acquired a range of skills including, but not limited to, anthropometry, audiometry, spirometry, visual acuity testing and colour vision testing. Students should be familiar with the procedures and processes related to pre-employment medicals, health surveillance, annual medicals, discharge medicals, the military medical classification system, military fitness for duty and sick parade.
