Linux Questions

Discussion Week 2

Instructions:

The Linux operating system is widely used in industry, especially for servers. Why do you believe this is the case?

If you’ve worked with Linux previously, share your experiences. How would you compare it with other operating systems—like Windows?

If you have little or no experience with it, what are your perceptions?

Discussion Week 4

Instructions:

Review this Linux case study. In particular, review the section titled “Results.”

Share your thoughts on Linux after reviewing this study. Did you learn anything that surprised you? Did it influence your opinion about Linux? Why or why not?

Discussion Week 6

Instructions:

Next week, the final element of your project will be due. In this phase, you’ll install Linux into a virtual machine and demonstrate some Linux commands.

A vital element of the project is virtualization. Have you previously used virtualization tools, such as VMware, VirtualBox, HyperV, or others? If so, share your experiences. If not, what are your observations? How do you think virtualization might be beneficial?

For your follow-up postings, feel free to ask any questions as you begin working on the virtual install. Have you run into any issues so far? What questions do you have about virtualization?

Discussion Week 8

Instructions:

Our discussion this week is all about Linux+ certification. To start, watch the video Linux+ Certification Common Questions.

After watching the video, do you have any specific comments or questions about certification?

Are you planning to take the Linux+ certification exam? Why or why not? Use this discussion forum to share your thoughts on the exam and ask any questions that you may have.

Discussion Week 2

Linux and Windows are both very popular among people using computers. However, Linux operating system is widely used in the industry, especially for servers, because of the several characteristics that are common in the operating system. One of the reasons why Linux is used more by industries is because windows have a large user base. As a result, many attempts are made by hackers on people that are using Windows than on people that are using Linux. There is a lot of sensitive information in companies’ servers, which has to be carefully guarded against hackers (Gosewehr et al., 2016). Windows is also slower than Linux, which has made people who want to use servers prefer the Linux operating system. People do not want to work with operating systems that take a lot of time to load data. Individuals must ensure that services are delivered at a high rate. The other perception that I have about Linux and the reason why it is popular is because of the open-source nature. The Windows operating system does not have an open-source nature, which is bad for the people who are using the system. On the other hand, a person can see the source code because the OS is an open-source project. On the other hand, Linux operating system is very secure, and this has attracted people who have a lot of files that they need to keep safe. Windows OS is vulnerable to a lot of attacks. Although Linux is not invulnerable to attacks, it is not as vulnerable as the windows operating system. Companies want to work with an operating system that can guarantee some form of protection against attacks. The way that Linux works are what makes the operating system secure. The package management is different from the Windows operating system, and this is one of the main reasons why the OS is secure. When a person has Linux operating system, they do not need to have anti-virus to protect their computers against threats. However, a person must have an anti-virus if they are using a windows operating system. Companies are therefore able to save money and stay secure because of the features that are available in the windows operating system.

Discussion Week 4

There are several things that I find particularly interesting after reading the case study related to Linux computers. One of the things that I found to be very interesting is that the operating system has evolved from being an underdog to becoming one of the world’s biggest operating systems. The operating system was small and did not have a lot of people who were using it. However, because of the security feature available in the computers, the OS has become of the largest in the world. The other thing that surprised me about the operating system was the sheer volume of the number of people that were using the operating system. I did not know that major corporations across the globe favored the OS. One of the organizations that have embraced the operating system is the financial markets. The people who deal with the financial markets want computers and operating systems to handle large amounts of data. The people who developed the OS have been key to ensure that the bugs commonly found in OS are removed quickly and with ease. There are millions of people that rely on the stock market to make a living. Such people want computers that can carry out calculations at a great speed without having the problems of hanging after several hours. Another thing that surprised me from the case study was how the OS has moved from depending on computers and being used in smartphones (Gosewehr et al., 2016). Before reading the article, I was not aware that the OS was being used by companies that were producing smartphones.

The article was instrumental in shaping my attitude towards the operating system and the things it stands for in technology. The article was an eye-opener about a technology firm’s capabilities if effort and talent are harnessed in the right direction. There is a lot that can be achieved by people who share the same goals and vision.
