Which topic of conversation makes you uncomfortable? What is the topic? Do you know why you find it difficult to talk about this topic?

One of the most challenging topics to discuss includes sexuality. Despite the critical role of sexual health on physical and mental health, I get uncomfortable discussing sexuality issues with patients. I find it hard to discuss the topic with my patients because of various reasons. One of them is the value-related barriers, such as gender difference, cultural/religious reasons, and personal values and beliefs (Annerstedt & Glasdam, 2019). For instance, I feel ashamed discussing sexual health problems with patients of the opposite gender. Also, my thoughts, values, and attitudes about sexual health limit me from discussing the topic with my patients. For example, I believe sexuality is a private matter and thus should not be discussed in public. Therefore, I get embarrassed whenever I discuss the topic with my patients in public. Secondly, I encounter various patient-related challenges, which hinder me from discussing the issue. Several patients consider sexuality a sensitive matter that needs to be handled with much respect and privately (Annerstedt & Glasdam, 2019). Consequently, many do not allow healthcare professionals to discuss sexual health problems with them publicly. Also, some patients refuse to discuss sexual health matters with healthcare professionals of the opposite gender. Thirdly, I encounter various organizational and academic-related barriers that restrain me from talking about sexuality. One of them is the lack of private rooms for sexual health assessment (Annerstedt & Glasdam, 2019). I find it more comfortable to discuss sexual health matters privately in healthcare settings. Besides, lack of educational materials about sexual health in healthcare organizations limits me from offering sexual health education to patients.

Sometimes, the organizational-related, patient-related, and personal-related factors make me get uncomfortable whenever I discuss sexual health matters with my patients. To avoid this situation, I always embrace various measures to ensure I talk about sexual health matters effectively without withdrawing from the conversation. For instance, I start by creating a positive relationship based on trust with my patients.  To achieve this, I always treat my patients with respect and consider their needs, feelings, and thoughts about their health and particularly sexual health matters. My patients get comfortable disclosing personal information and asking questions about sexual health matters with this positive relationship. Therefore, I respond to the sexual health matters, considering their feelings, values, and thoughts about the topic to avoid offending them. Secondly, patients with sexual health issues usually tend to feel disappointed, frustrated, and emotionally exhausted. Therefore, they can easily feel uncomfortable when a healthcare professional talks about their sexual health issues. To avoid diverting from the topic, I listen compassionately, appreciate how difficult it is for the patient to discuss the matter, and let the patient know the sexual health issue is common. This enables me to ensure the patient feels relaxed and comfortable talking and listening to my advice about sexual health matters. This gives me a favorable environment to discuss the issue with the patient.

Sometimes I talk to very aggressive patients or clients. This is likely to occur when I hold a different opinion from that of my patient/client. I handle the situation by giving the other person an opportunity to lead me in the conversation and present his/her view about the matter. I then acknowledge his/her view about the subject to make him/her feel comfortable about the conversation and be ready to listen to other opinions. After that, I present my view to the patient with sufficient evidence to convince the other party to recognize my opinion.

I am flexible in a conversation. Therefore, whenever I am in a conversation with someone, I take my time to listen to the other party’s opinions and then assess the information against mine to determine whether it is more relevant and appropriate. If the new information is more appropriate, I re-evaluate my position and continue the conversation.
