One successful leader I have chosen is Clara Barton, the most privileged women in American history. She jeopardized her life to ensure support and supplies to the soldiers in the field during Civil War. She founded American Red Cross back in 1881, at 59 years and led it for the next 23 years (Lambakis 2020). Clara acquired her power through her hard work and perseverance, which yielded to the success of her mission. To serve as a change agent, Clara Barton as a nurse, used to speak at some meetings; however, although she was not present in all meetings, it’s debatable that she became amongst the most influential individuals in attaining rights for American women. She did more than only speak and led via example. She kept her eyes open for other Americans in the classroom, on the battlefield, and in the boardroom, not just on what women would do but similarly what they would be allowed to do. Barton’s persistence in this male-dominated era did not just lead to creating one of the most important and powerful institutions in American history, but she similarly established to both women and men that women may succeed as leaders in society. Clara Barton ran an exemplary life that she overcame disparities of society, paving the way for upcoming women to show their capacity to men. She started her extraordinary life by building school and affording free education for a hundred youths. Clara was a successful change agent as her achievements were unique for a woman of her, or any, time. She recognized a free public school, worked in the U.S. Patent Office, initiated the Treaty of Geneva, issued, lectured, promoted, initiated, and led American Red Cross. The two important things that made Clara successful were that she led as an example and had perseverance in everything she did.
Another successful leader is Florence Nightingale. She was the founder of modern nursing (Pfettscher 2021). Nightingale came to eminence when she was serving as she trained nurses and worked as the manager during the Crimean War, where she organized treatment care for the wounded soldiers. She established and practised transformational leadership before that phrase was overused. Her style of leadership may be well-thought-out as a stairstep leadership development mode. This model is based on the idea that all nurses are leaders and attain leadership capability with time. This, as a result, led to her success in leading others. She recognized nursing as a valued profession and developed a hospital. She established the first modern pharmacy, nutrition, nursing and laundry services. Her thorough recordkeeping became a forerunner of recent medical records and an epidemiology function. Consequently, Scutari hospitals had already been changed to efficiently-organized, smooth-running operations. Nightingale was a successful change agent in her own right and appeared able to do so with no concession; leadership practices and support were part of strong points and used them towards her advantage in her tireless work with the policy change regarding human rights.
One unsuccessful leader I have chosen is Bill Timmons. He served as CEO of Hacienda Healthcare for approximately 30 years. Starting in 2006 and again in successive years, the Hacienda Board of Directors present was informed of allegations that many staff felt sexually harassed or poorly treated by Timmons. The board members alerted to these claims took them seriously. To investigate the most serious claims, Board hired law attorneys who specify in cases of harassment. Bills power was based on incompetency as he gained it via harassing his employees that finally yielded to resigning from his position. To serve as a change agent, Bill, found himself in leadership through his qualities as a CEO, counting education, among others. He was able to demonstrate leadership qualities and values, and that, as a CEO, meant a super change agent. Unfortunately, Bill was not a successful change agent as he began harassing his employees instead of guaranteeing change for the best of the hospital through his position.
