Brief example of using Lewin’s Change Theory with the previously presented pain example:

  1. Unfreezing: Prepare the unit for change to using PCA pumps on post-op patients by sharing with the staff your research articles that reveal that patients have overall improved pain control when PCA pumps are used. May also show other data such as patient surveys that demonstrate inadequate pain control.
  2. Transition: Policy is written to support the use of PCA pumps on all post-op patients; training of doctors, nurses, and other staff occurs.
  3. Refreezing: Patient surveys show improved scores regarding pain management after implementing full use of PCA pumps.

Bowel preparation is a vital issue in colonoscopy as it is closely linked to the quality of the procedure. Attaining the best bowel preparation for colonoscopy effectively finds lesions and applies the most advanced methods. Implementation change in bowel preparation is difficult due to the barriers linked to the change process. However, with the use of change theories, organization management can implement change successfully. Kurt Lewin established a change theory that comprises three steps which are effective in the implementation of change (Hussain et al., 2018). These steps include; unfreezing, changing, and refreezing. For Lewin, the change process comprises building a perception that change is needed, moving towards the anticipated change, and finally relying on the new conduct as a custom.

Unfreezing- This process entails finding an approach to making it possible for individuals to let go of the old pattern. It is vital to overcome the strains of group conformity and individual resistance. There are three approaches for achieving unfreezing. These include driving forces in that direction, decreasing the resistance forces that negatively impact the movement, and finding a combination of the first two approaches (Udod and Wagner, 2018).

Change- The change stage entails moving to a new level, which entails changes in feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Changing also involves evaluating the alternatives, demonstrating the benefits of change, and lowering the forces that influence change negatively. Some change approaches include role modeling new ways, brainstorming, training, and coaching.

Refreezing-Refreezing entails implementing and stabilizing a new norm into the system to become a habit, thus increasing the ability to resist change (Udod and Wagner, 2018). Refreezing allows the establishment of change as a standard operating procedure, thus making the change relatively permanent.

To facilitate change in bowel preparation, there is a need to evaluate the best change theory that will achieve the expected outcomes. Lewin’s change model is effective in the implementation of Slip Bowel preparation.
