21ST Century Cures Act 

·       This is a legislation that was assented by Preside Barrack Obama on December, 13, 2016.

·       The legislation comprise provisions that aim to enhance efficiency in the development and delivery of drugs and medical devices, speed up research into severe illnesses, address the issue of opioid crisis, and promote mental health services (Congress.gov, 2016).

·       The Cures Act focuses on easing regulatory burdens linked with the use of electronic health record (EHR) systems and health information technology (HIT).

·       It also aims at promoting interoperability and discouraging information blocking by health IT developers, healthcare providers, health information exchanges (HIEs), and health information networks, to ensure enhanced access to information transferred using electronic health information (EHI) (Congress.gov, 2016).

 

 

Impact of you 21ST Century Cures Act on system implementation

·       Requires healthcare providers required to release reports, lab results, and other health information to patients with no limitations (Martin, 2020). 

·       It allows patients will have access to their health information stored in their clinical notes.

·       Allows use of healthcare information technologies such as smartphone apps to provide to store and transfer health information.

·       Requires establishment of robust security to safeguard patient information from computer criminals (Martin, 2020).

·       Requires preparation of staff for compliance with the legislation.

 

 

 

·       It removes information blocking between devices, applications, and health systems hence allowing healthcare providers to obtain and share health data to other providers efficiently. 

·       Allows use of modern smartphone apps to provide patient with convenient access to their records (Lye et al., 2018).
