Influences of Ancient Architecture
Architecture refers to the art of designing and constructing buildings. One of the most historical forms of architecture that continues to drive influence is Greco-Roman architecture. Its influence is seen through application in the creation of buildings all over the world. Greco-Roman architecture is famous for producing massive columns and defined structures that are magnificent. The structures that apply this style are renowned for their symmetry, vaults, and archways.
One of the famous architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture is St. Peter’s Square. The structure was erected in 1667 under the direction of Pope Alexander XII. It refers to the large open plaza in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, Rome. The plaza was designed by one of the renowned skilled architects, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Its influence is both Roman and Greek. It is an essential structure in both Vatican and Rome. Besides representing the core of Vatican City, it serves as a tourist site where visitors can see the Papal Apartments (Civitatis Tours SL., n.d). In addition, it’s a significant part of Christian history because it represents a place where many Christians suffered from martyrdom. Today it functions as a gathering place where Pope gives his blessings.

Another famous architectural work that was influenced by Greco-Roman architecture is The Low Memorial Library. Built-in 1897, the building is located on the campus of Columbia University, New York City. Charles Follen McKim designed the structure. It was the first significant building of Columbia University’s new campus. It serves as the campus plan’s visual and academic focal point, housing both administrative offices and the college libraries. It influences is both Roman and Greek. It occupies the central place in the architectural life of America University Archives, 2020). It serves as a National Historic Landmark in America, a mark of cultural diversity, a tourism center, and its design is recognized as a classic of Beaux-Arts planning principles.

Evaluative critique
Both architectural works are influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. In addition, the aerial and vertical of both structures can be used to predict the function and significance of the structure. The structure of St. Peter’s Square is a vast outdoor space, with a visible high viewpoint. It appears as a beautiful symmetry of the oval shape with colonnades that form an open area. This suggests that the intent of the structure could be a public address. On the other hand, the structure of The Low Memorial Library is characterized by massive columns in the front view that gives an onlooker the impression of academic functions. The multiple columns and flight of stairs towards the door could represent thousands of books on display inside the library.
