Summative Assessment: Importance of Statistics and Data Analytics in Health Care
Imagine you are a health care manager for the Krahe Health Care facility. You have emailed your assistant manager, Michelle, the survey data for patient satisfaction, quality of care, and likelihood to recommend. You have asked Michelle to review the data and create a presentation for the staff addressing the impact of the data on the facility. Michelle reviews the data but questions the importance and usefulness of the data to the staff.

Increasing competition in every aspect of the healthcare field affects all healthcare facilities. Krahe Health Care Facility continues to be rated one of the best facilities in the city and prides itself on the quality of care that it gives to patients and their families, the personalized care plans each patient receives, patient satisfaction and the high number of patient referrals/recommendations. How patients perceive the care they receive, if they are satisfied with their healthcare experience and treatment as well as feel that they are cared about and heard is a major factor in why Krahe Health Care Facility receives so many recommendations and referrals as well as continues to be praised as one of the top ten healthcare facilities in the city.
The data that I have asked you to review to create this presentation for the staff is important and useful for the following reasons:
1. With the mixed method of Quantitative and Qualitative data for patient satisfaction, quality of care, and likelihood to recommend we are able to present a deeper understanding of all the aspects that are needed to ensure that we not only continue to offer quality services and products but to be able to improve as well as incorporate new ideas and implement new learning and training to continue to stay competitive and ensure patient satisfaction.
2. With the use of data analytics, we as a team can improve our decision making to ensure better outcomes, market more efficiently, have better insight to what our patients need as well as personalize their experiences, tailor their care to meet their needs and build stronger relationships, also, we will e able to operate more efficiently streamline our process and improve revenue to continue to build a better organization and offer more to not only our patients but to our staff.
The survey data for patient satisfaction, quality of care, and likelihood to recommend that I have asked you review and create a presentation for our staff includes primary and secondary data that has been collected so that Krahe Health Care Facility can “create holistic views of patients, personalize treatments, advance treatment methods, improve communication between doctors and patients, and enhance health outcomes”. According to Nursing, 2016, para 3, “the diversity of the general population is a relevant topic on the minds of many” and with a diverse population that we service, again according to Nursing, 2016, para 4, “Because multiculturalism affects the nature of illness and disease as well as morbidity and mortality, we must learn to adapt our practice to various cultural values and beliefs. Relevant factors include national origin, religious affiliation, language, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, socioeconomic status and more”. With the various cultural values, beliefs, and the diversity of our patients, it is imperative that we as a whole address meeting the needs of our patients, determining what it takes to achieve patient satisfaction and to ensure that our outstanding reputation ensures recommendations and referrals from our patients. With this being said, I hope you can see the usefulness, value and importance of how this data impacts our organization and how as a whole we need to wall work together and understand what our patients and their families need to meet their expectations and needs. Our staff needs to be presented with this data to be able to make informed decisions, work together as a team, provide quality services to our patients, help this organization flourish, and ensure the best possible outcomes for all.
Even though this presentation is for our staff, it is important to the whole organization, as well as to our patients and their families, and new patients as well as our community that we serve. Krahe Health Care Facility plays an active role in ensuring that our community stays healthy by participating in health fairs, free clinics, providing services to our patients and offering volunteer services.
With the use of statistics and data analytics not just for our use but in the health care industry altogether, according to the University of Pittsburgh, para 5, “We are able to see a holistic view of each individual patient as well as trends tied to location, socioeconomic status, race and predisposition” and “the use of health data analytics allows for improvements to patient care, faster and more accurate diagnoses, preventive measures, more personalized treatment and more informed decision-making. At the business level, it can lower costs, simplify internal operations and more”. With the advancements in new technology there are a variety of tools/systems that help in collecting, storing, sharing, analyzing and processing statistics and data including electronic health records, personal health records, patient portals, telehealth and electronic prescription eservices to name a few so data and statistics can according to University of Pittsburgh, 2021, para 15, “improve day-to-day operations and better patient care, it can now be better used in predictive modeling. Instead of just looking at historical information or current information, we can use both datasets to track trends and make predictions. We are now able to take preventive measures and track the outcomes”.
Patient satisfaction, quality of care and recommendations have an impact on a health care organization’s profitability. According to Muhlestein and Richter, 2017, para 4, “a positive patient experience is associated with increased profitability and a negative patient experience is even more strongly associated with decreased profitability”. Healthcare leaders and managers need to provide knowledge, education, training, technology, staffing and promote patient experience programs to improve patient satisfaction, and quality service as well as profitability.
According to CMS.gov, 2021, para 1, “CMS has long identified staffing as one of the vital components of a nursing home’s ability to provide quality care. CMS has utilized staffing data for a myriad of purposes in an effort to more accurately and effectively gauge its impact on quality of care in nursing homes. With staffing based on census data, it is important that data is accurate since this determines that level of staff required and impacts the quality of care that patients receive.
In conclusion, all components of data provided are intertwined and play an important role in how our facility operates, provides quality service, ensures patient satisfaction, ensures recommendations, promotes growth and profitability and directly affects staffing and following regulations set by federal agencies. The survey data provided directly affects of areas of our facility and as a team this data is useful and important to all staff.
