Identifying Research Methodologies – WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

Is there a difference between a common practice and best practice?

When you first went to work for your current organization, experienced colleagues may have shared with you details about processes and procedures. Perhaps you even attended an orientation session to brief you on these matters. As a ‘rookie,’ you likely kept the nature of your questions to those with answers that would best help you perform your new role.

Over time and with experience, perhaps you recognized aspects of these processes and procedures that you wanted to question further. This is the realm of clinical inquiry.

Clinical inquiry is the practice of asking questions about clinical practice. To continuously improve patient care, all nurses should consistently use clinical inquiry to question why they are doing something the way they are doing it. Do they know why it is done this way, or is it just because we have always done it this way? Is it a common practice or a best practice?

In this Assignment, you will identify clinical areas of interest and inquiry and practice searching for research in support of maintaining or changing these practices. You will also analyze this research to compare research methodologies employed.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry. Keep in mind that the clinical issue you identify for your research will stay the same for the entire course.
Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
Review the results of your peer-reviewed research and reflect on the process of using an unfiltered database to search for peer-reviewed research.
Reflect on the types of research methodologies contained in the four relevant peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Part 1: Identifying Research Methodologies

After reading each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, use the Matrix Worksheet template to analyze the methodologies applied in each of the four peer-reviewed articles. Your analysis should include the following:

The full citation of each peer-reviewed article in APA format.
A brief (1-paragraph) statement explaining why you chose this peer-reviewed article and/or how it relates to your clinical issue of interest, including a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest.
A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article.
A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the research methodology used. Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific.
A brief (1- to 2-paragraph) description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Workplace Violence

Workplace violence (WPV) is an acknowledged threat in the healthcare industry. It refers to any act of threat or harassment, intimidation, physical violence, and other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the workplace. Workplace violence can involve clients, visitors, workers, and clients. Aides and nurses are at a higher risk since they are at direct contact with the patients. Workplace violence results in reduced productivity and efficiency in healthcare, negatively affect job satisfaction levels, and negatively impacts nurses’ quality of working life. This paper will summarize four articles that relate to workplace violence clinical issues based on how the article refers to these clinical issues, the aim of the researchers, the methodology used by the researchers, and the methodology’s strengths.

Article 1

Jakobsson, J., Axelsson, M., & Örmon, K. (2020). The face of workplace violence: \

Experiences of healthcare professionals in surgical hospital wards. Nursing research and practice2020.

Why I chose the article and how it relates to my clinical issues.

I chose this article since the researchers have also recognized Workplace Violence as a Global public health concern among health care professionals. The authors explain that the main form of workplace violence that patients or visitors perpetrate on healthcare professionals include pinching, pushing, punching, spitting and kicking, and verbal abuse. The authors further discuss the approaches that could mitigate workplace violence in a healthcare setting, such as avoiding unnecessary contact with the patients and visitors and calling security guards if situations are out of control.

Aim of the article

The researchers evaluated how healthcare providers in surgical hospitals wards manage and experience workplace violence perpetrated by visitors or patients.

Methodology used

The researchers used a qualitative inductive approach and collected data using focus group interviews. A population sample of sixteen healthcare providers working in surgical wards was used as the research participants. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data.

Strengths of the Methodology

While conducting interviews, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews whereby opening and probing questions were used. The interview was conducted for more than 1 hour, and audios were recorded and transcribed. This allowed the researchers to have deep knowledge and understanding of how Workplace Violence occurs in health care settings.

Article 2

Brann, M., & Hartley, D. (2017). Nursing student evaluation of NIOSH workplace violence

prevention for nurses online course. Journal of safety research60, 85-91.

Why I choose the article and how it relates to my clinical issue.

Workplace violence has significant negative repercussions, and measures have to be put in place e to reduce the public health concern. This article discusses how online courses developed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have helped have create awareness and educate nurses and other participants on workplace violence prevention approaches and how to enhance the safety of the nurses.

Aim of the research

The researchers aimed to investigate how the online courses developed by NIOSH have created awareness for nurses and educated the participants about workplace violence.

Methodology used

The study applied a mixed-method approach to evaluate nurses’ knowledge and awareness of workplace violence. Focus group discussion and Pre/post and post-test survey discussions assessed respondents’ knowledge and awareness; evaluated course designed and probed increasing participation recommendations and approaches for developing message retention.

Strengths of the methodology

The focus groups’ qualitative data reinforced quantitative findings.

Article 3

Mento, C., Silvestri, M. C., Bruno, A., Muscatello, M. R. A., Cedro, C., Pandolfo, G., &

Zoccali, R. A. (2020). Workplace violence against healthcare professionals: A systematic review. Aggression and violent behavior51, 101381.

Why I choose the article and how it relates to my clinical issue.

The researcher discusses and acknowledges workplace violence as a global public health concern. I chose this article since it lays a foundation for future researchers to effectively develop strategies that will reduce the incidences of workplace violence in clinical settings.

Aim

The authors of this article aim to evaluate the impact that workplace violence exposure poses to health care providers, how the health care providers’ knowledge about workplace violence can be improved, and how future researchers can effectively identify strategies that can minimize workplace violence incidences in healthcare settings.

Methodology

The authors carried out the research in adherence to PRISMA guidelines. The keywords used to search for information included aggression, workplace violence, and aggression department emergency. Numerous articles and publications were used during the study.

Strengths of research methodology

Numerous articles were used to justify the information shared. The keywords used helped find articles and publications relevant to the topic of discussion. Also, the keywords will help future researchers when they are researching the field.

Article 4

Li, N., Zhang, L., Xiao, G., Chen, J., & Lu, Q. (2019). The relationship between workplace

violence, job satisfaction, and turnover intention in emergency nurses. International emergency nursing45, 50-55.

Why I choose the article and how it relates to my clinical issue.

The researchers discuss how healthcare personnel in the emergency departments units are highly exposed to workplace violence. This article is among the few studies that have been carried out to investigate how workplace violence has impacted job turnover and satisfaction among healthcare professionals. I chose the article since it will form a foundation for future researchers who wish to conduct more profound research on the Impacts of Workplace violence on the level of job satisfaction.

Aim

The researchers aimed to discuss how workplace violence impacts job satisfaction and levels of turnover on emergency unit nurses.

Methodology

Workplace violence, turnover intention, and job satisfaction data were collected using a cross-sectional study. The participants were three hundred and eight-five nurses working in the emergency unit department and thirteen working in general hospitals. The relationship between workplace violence, turnover intention, and job satisfaction was tested using structural equation modeling.

Strength of the methodology.

The large sample size increased the chances of applicability of the findings in a broad population setting. The study also used articles less than ten years old to ensure that the results can still be applied in the current clinical practice.
