Human Experience Across the Health-Il lness Continuum
The Health-illness continuum is a model that illustrates human wellbeing. It was developed by John Travis (Kishan, 2020). The theorist holds that an individual’s wellbeing consists of mental consciousness, emotional health, and the state of illness. The model identifies health as a variable component that changes from time to time. The right side of the model represents a high level of wellness. To achieve optimum health, one needs to go through various key stages, including awareness, education, and growth. Individuals with higher levels of education, self-awareness, economically stable, and have a positive attitude are more likely to achieve a higher level of health, thus moving towards the right side. The left side of the model represents a decline in an individuals’ wellbeing, hence resulting in premature death. Individuals whose health level falls on this side are more experiencing signs and symptoms of various health conditions or disabilities and thus require treatment. However, further decline in health can lead to premature death (Kishan, 2020).
The Importance of this Perspective to Health and when Providing Care to Patients
The continuum care system helps track an individual’s level of wellness. This perspective is crucial when caring for patients since it allows patients to determine their level of wellbeing. With this information, an individual is able to seek care and embrace various measures, including education, to improve his/her health status. Besides, through this perspective, a healthcare professional is able to understand the progression from premature death to the optimal health level. The main objective of healthcare professionals is to assist individuals or patients in achieving a high level of wellness by helping them to address various health issues affecting and enhancing their emotional and mental wellness. This model helps healthcare professionals accomplish this objective by tracking an individual’s level of wellbeing and identifying the intensity of care they need to stay healthy. For instance, an individual whose level of wellbeing fall on the left side requires a high level of health to improve his wellness (Kishan, 2020). Secondly, the model informs healthcare professionals of the strategies they can utilize to enhance an individual’s wellbeing. For instance, a nurse can promote one’s level of wellness by providing him/her with health education. This will motivate an individual to improve and maintain his/her health, prevent disease, and reduce unhealthy behaviors that lead to a decline in health. Besides, the nurse can provide physical treatment to enhance one’s level of wellness.
Importance of Understanding the Health-Iliness Continuum
As a healthcare provider, understanding the model enables me to promote the value and dignity of individuals or groups and to serve others in a manner that enhances human flourishing. One of the ways through which this model helps me achieve this is by education. The Health-illness continuum recognizes education as one of the main driving forces toward attaining a high level of wellness. Therefore, I educate patients on various factors that contribute to a high level of wellness to motivate and inspire them to embrace health behaviors that can help them achieve optimum health. Besides, I provide health education to the communities I serve to enable them to identify various risk factors affecting their health and the strategies they can utilize to improve their health. However, I first assess the education levels of the individuals or groups I serve to determine the health literacy levels and identify appropriate educational strategies that can enable me to educate them effectively.
Currently, I am at a neutral health status. This is because I have no discernible illness at the moment or experiencing any issues that might lead to a low level of wellness. My goal is to achieve a high level of wellness. Various factors hinder me from achieving the highest level of wellness. One of them includes physical inactivity. I lead a sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, I rarely engage in any form of physical activity. This exposes me to various health issues such as obesity and overweight. Also, I am not getting enough sleep. I spend most of my nights out with my friends or watching movies. Sleep deprivation can lead to mental and physical health issues and undermine one’s overall quality of life (Hisler & Brenner, 2019). In addition, I embrace unhealthy eating habits. I frequently take my meals from outside due to my tight schedule. Therefore, I have increased my intake of junk foods rich in sugar and fats. These foods increase the risk of obesity, cardiovascular health issues, and chronic diseases.
Therefore, Travis’s model provides various measures that I can use to achieve a high level of wellness. One of them includes increasing self-awareness. I am to use different strategies to improve my self-awareness to achieve my goal. First, I keep a journal where I will write down my plans and priorities to fulfill my health needs. I will then conduct a self-assessment against my goals and priorities to identify failures and successes. This information will allow me to develop new measures or plans that will move towards my achievements. Secondly, I will question my beliefs, values, and lifestyle. Usually, people embrace various unhealthy lifestyles or values that hinder them from attaining a high level of wellness. For instance, I lead a sedentary lifestyle, which will likely expose me to various health risks. Therefore, I aim to create more time for physical activities, fix my sleeping schedule, and increase my nutritional intake to prevent multiple health risks, such as obesity and hypertension (Andonian et al., 2019).
There are various resources available to help me move towards the highest level of wellness. One of them is that I am a healthcare worker. This provides me with an opportunity to interact with other healthcare professionals from diverse medical fields, such as nutritionists and physiotherapists. These healthcare professionals will guide me to lead a healthy lifestyle, manage chronic diseases, such as obesity, and recover from illnesses. Besides, the healthcare professionals will help actualize the self-awareness point by providing feedback on my lifestyle and any new adjustments in my life. Also, I aim to achieve a high level of health by improving my education. This model supports that education helps one gain an optimal level of health. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in nursing. Besides, I will use diverse resources to improve my knowledge, including health books and journals. This will enhance my health literacy and my journey towards achieving a high level of wellness.
