The most appropriate ways of communicating with patients from various cultures include utilizing different models and frameworks that can enhance communication and mutual understanding between a healthcare provider and cross-cultural patients. In Giger and Davidhizars’ model, each individual is accepted as unique and assessed in terms of six cultural dimensions including communication, space, social organizations, time, environmental control, and biological variations (Andrews et al., 2019). Relying on such a model can play a significant role in promoting mutual understanding between a Healthcare practitioner and a patient and improving patient experience in a healthcare setting.

One of the most effective skills that healthcare providers can utilize to communicate effectively with patients from diverse cultures is listening. Healthcare providers should therefore take time to assess and understand the health condition of each patient and its causes objectively (Ladha et al., 2018). Health caregivers should also approach patients from cross-cultural groups with an attitude of humility and curiosity which will enhance trust and foster understanding between the healthcare giver and the patient, which is the foundation of healthcare relationships (Ladha et al., 2018).

Healthcare providers should also learn to explain when communicating with patients from across cultural groups. By taking time to explain their perception to patients, health caregivers can therefore help patients to come to an understanding of their condition (Brooks et al., 2019). Health caregivers should consequently understand that patients understand a certain illness or health differently based on their ethnic background or culture. Effective explanation can therefore promote communication between a healthcare practitioner and a patient from a diverse cultural background (Shirazi et al., 2020).

Healthcare practitioners should also rely on acknowledgment to communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds. Healthcare practitioners should always be respectful in trying to understand the patient’s views on given issues and how the patient’s background may affect their perception of health and certain treatments. Healthcare practitioners should respectively point out areas of difference and agreement with patients and try to evaluate and determine which different belief systems can result in therapeutic dilemmas (Brooks et al., 2019).

Healthcare practitioners should also use a recommendation strategy to propose and develop suggestions to patients from cross-cultural backgrounds and their families. Health care practitioners should therefore ensure that their recommendations are in line with a patient’s cultural background and values. To communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds. Healthcare practitioners should also negotiate so as to reach an agreement on an ideal approach to treat patients in partnership with the specific patients and their families. Such treatment approaches should therefore consider the culturally relevant interventions that can be acceptable according to a patient’s perception and can also enhance their health and wellbeing (Ladha et al., 2018).

Health caregivers should also be considerate of the nonverbal communication differences between themselves and patients from cross-cultural backgrounds to promote effective communication. Communication styles differ significantly across different cultures. For instance, western cultures are known to be more direct and to rely on more direct means of communication compared to other cultures. However, some cultures rely on indirect forms of communication, which mainly rely on nonverbal cues and indirect communication. Cultures that are high-context rely on body language, tone of voice, and various cues to pass meanings. Healthcare practitioners have to be aware of the varying communication styles among different cultures so as to be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups of patients (Shirazi et al., 2020).
