Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
The selected topic is electronic medication administration with barcoding. The technology is a scanning system used to intercept medication errors at the point of drug administration. The technology is commonly used at the bedside where nurses and clinicians scan the bar-codes on a patient’s wristband or the prescribed medication to ensure that they have the right patient, correct medication, dose, and that the time of administration is right.
The RRationale for Selecting the Technology
Barcode technology is an efficient and effective technology in addressing medication errors in the healthcare system as they result in adverse drug events. The current focus in healthcare is on improving the quality of care and enhancing patient safety. Medication errors are a major threat to the patient’s safety and quality of health care despite being preventable. Adverse drug events resulting from medication errors affect nearly half of all hospitalized patients or more, with 18% of the patients being affected by serious ADEs. Estimated costs associated with medication errors are approximately $3.5 billion every year, while the estimated annual deaths associated with medication errors are 7000 deaths (Thompson et al., 2018). Medication errors are therefore a major public health concern that can be addressed by bar-code technology.
Research Process Employed, Databases Used, and Search Items Used
The research process commenced with selecting the topic and determining the most efficient databases to generate the most relevant study materials. I utilized CINHAL and PubMed databases to locate articles. Major search items used include phrases such as ‘bar-code technology,’ ‘barcoding, ‘ electronic medication,’ and ‘use of barcoding in medication administration. The search was limited to articles published within the last five years and those available in full.

The focus of the research article was assessing the impact of implementing bar-code medication administration technology on the rate of errors linked to medication administration in the inpatient setting. The article focused on those errors that affect the patient and result in patient harm.
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of bar-code medication administration technology on medication administration errors. The study involved inpatient nursing units at a large academic medical center. The technology was administered from September 2008 to October 2010, w8ith approximately 3100 nurses being trained. The study’s findings indicated that implementation of the bar-code medication administration led to a 43.5% reduction in medication administration errors and a 55.4% decrease in actual patient harm events. The findings also indicated that bar-code technology facilitates further reduction of errors as the technology prevents potential medication administration errors at the bedside. The study was unique as it focused on reported adverse events and focused on an inpatient setting.
