Cultural Competence Continuum Rationale


The controversial issue that was chosen is Religious clothing and dress codes. In this subject the culture identifiers that relate would be religion, beliefs, and ethnicity. After reviewing the cultural competence continuum, I find myself a number four on the chart as a Cultural Pre-Competence. When it comes to other religions dress codes I know there are different religions that have special attire but need to gain more knowledge of the names of the attire and why they are worn. Dress codes can be strict but with the first amendment the students should be able to express their religion beliefs and stay within the school’s dress code.

Relationship to Cultural Competence Continuum

The relationship between cultural pre-competence and religious clothing when thinking how it pertains to myself is that I feel I have enough knowledge to respond when the students want to express their religious beliefs while being told they need to abide by school dress code. I have limit knowledge when interacting with other cultural groups. (Nuri-Robins, Lindsey, Lindsey & Terrell, 2011).

Your Place on the Continuum Reflection

The reason I chose Cultural pre-competence on the chart is because I do see culture as important but have limitation/skills to practicing when around other cultural groups. (NuriRobins et al., 2011) Living in the United States we have a lot of different cultures and religions around us. Growing up in the military you may not always understand the different religions, but you learn that are there differences in them.

Reflection on Steps to being an Effective Educator

As an educator I would like to be higher on the chart. To do that I will need to do a few things. One of the things that would need to be done is to adapt to diversity. Which means to continuously lean what is necessary to deal with issues that may arise by differences. (Nuri-Robins et al., 2011) Another thing that can be done would be to gain more knowledge about the different cultures and religions. We need to learn to take advantage of the teachable moments to share cultural/religious differences. (Nuri-Robins et al., 2011) In the world we are all living in we need to learn to respect the different cultures and religions that make this world go around.


With the controversial issue that I have chosen as a future educator I will need to have more knowledge on religious clothing and its affects on the school uniform policy. If there are any students in the classroom who may wear special attire due to religious beliefs this could cause a distraction with the class. This would be good lesson for the student to share with their classmates about why they wear the item and what it means to them. Another solution that can be done is to have students do some research on different cultures, so they can find out how they might differ from how their lives are. Not only will they gain knowledge of the culture but of the religious beliefs they may have, different foods they may or may not eat and the clothing they wear. It takes a village to help our children grow and as a future educator my goal is to be part of that village in helping my students to become the best that they can be.
