Diversity in History

In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:

In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of diversity?
Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.
How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and diversity have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession (nursing)?

In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of diversity?

Diversity is an essential concept in the current society. Societies nowadays are comprised of individuals from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and therefore diversity is essential in assisting people to understand how to interact with such individuals (Ely & Thomas, 2020). History is crucial in understanding diversity; it helps individuals understand how society has changed over time. Through history lens, it is possible to study the origin and how diversity has changed over time, the events that have contributed to the diversity changes, laws and legislation developed, and the differences between the past and the current status (American Historical Association, 2022).

Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart.

One of the recent events concerning diversity is the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020. It is related to the black power movement in the 1960s and 70s. The two events were driven by criminal injustices that have been committed against black people. The Black Lives Matter movement was a response to the death of African Americans, including George Floyd. In contrast, the black power movement was initiated to advocate for the economic empowerment of black people and develop institutions such as political institutions that supported the black culture (Buchanan et al., 2020). Looking through history has helped me to understand the importance of civil rights and equality for all people in the community. History has been essential in understanding the claims behind these movements and how they have contributed to the current status in our society, and the role they continue to play in society concerning how different ethnic groups interact (National Archives, 2022).

How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and diversity have an influence in nursing?

Understanding the relationship between culture, diversity, and history enables nurses to develop effective relationships with their patients, improving the quality of care. Nowadays, nurses encounter patients from different community groups, which necessitates the need to be able to understand and relate with them effectively. Analyzing and understanding history, culture, and diversity is essential in ensuring that nurses are culturally competent to effectively deal with patients from different ethnic backgrounds (Ely & Thomas, 2020).
