Discuss and support with specific theory and evidence what extent you think nursing research has impacted healthcare policy

Nursing research has impacted healthcare policy to a large extent. Nurse researchers have several opportunities to improve health care by making contributions contributing to the designing and execution of health policy. Researchers influence health policy by identifying vital problems affecting populations, conducting research on the harm benefits of policy solutions, and being active participants in the policy process (According to Clancy et al., 2012). Problem identification is the initial phase process of policymaking and nursing research in this stage offers evidence through identification, definition, and description of the extent of the problem (Ellenbecker et al., 2016).

A 2013 a descriptive study “Hepatitis B virus infection and immunizations among Asian American college students: infection, exposure, and immunity rates” conducted by Lee and colleagues is an example of nursing research that contributed to problem identification. The nurse researcher partnered with a multidisciplinary team to investigate the problem of the considerably higher rates of HBV infections among Asian American college students not born in the United States compared to their U.S. born counterparts. After identifying that the higher rates of infections among the foreign-born Asian American students was because they were not aware that they were infected with HBV, the researchers pointed out that it was important to regularly screen high-risk populations for HBV such as Asian students. How conflicts can occur through the application of research in politics and policy development. How can the impact be managed to avoid any potential pitfalls?

The policy process is inevitably affixed in political negotiation, persuasion, and values. Within this politicized context, some forms of evidence are inescapably viewed as more pertinent than others for reinforcing policy positions. The expression of these political dynamics is via the preferences and setting of agenda of legislators, stakeholders, political leaders, and lobbyists, arbitrated via public opinion and media communication (Head, 2015). The impact can be managed to avoid any potential pitfalls by collaborative policymaking. According to Hudson et al (2019), the designing of policy needs constant collaboration with a variety of stakeholders at local implemental administrative, managerial, multiple political, and policy-making levels along with the involvement of local implementation actors including local service agencies and end-users.
