  Critique of a t-test Article

Ho et al. (2019) in their article reveal that concomitant risk of physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle improvement causing several non-communicable illnesses is acknowledged internationally. Thus, there is importance to develop strategies to create a strong public health-based policy to overcome this issue. Their study checked the distribution and changes in BMI over six years between girls and boys. The data on kids’ weight and height, and BMI were gathered. An overall of 5369 kids was enrolled from ten schools in Macao, and these kids were six years old back in 2008 and turned 11 years in 2013. This study involved statistical analyses of descriptive statistics, a Chi-squared test, and a t-test. Results showed a greater BMI among males than in females of all ages at a 0.05 significance level, and 8 and 9 ages appeared to have a difficult period for an increase in obesity and overweight.

The authors used descriptive statistics as a research method, including mean and standard deviation, to analyze basic features. In this case, this research method provided simple summaries of the sample and measures and enabled the authors to present their data in a more eloquent way that allowed simpler data analysis (Frankfort-Nachmias, Leon-Guerrero & Davis, 2020). Mean, as used in this case, would incorporate scores from each subject in the research study, whereas standard deviation would inform of distribution shape and how close participant’s data values are from the mean value.

The authors used a t-test in their research to determine the difference between male and female sexes as their variables. An excellent example in the article is that independent-samples t-tests were led to determine differences in sex groups for weight, height, and BMI for school kids in every age group. Generally, a t-test is a statistical test used to compare means of two groups (Walden University Library, n.d.). According to my perception, it is the most appropriate choice in this case since, with its simplicity of interpretation, the output from applied independent samples would inform how different the mean of a single sample is from the mean of other group. It would similarly inform of every group’s mean and the average variance between two groups. Besides, it would inform whether this particular difference is statistically significant.

The authors displayed the data in a Table. This was important since the data made results more simply understandable and thus more attractive to users of the produced information. For instance, the table showed that obesity and overweight are prevalent when the boys attained ten years (overweight – 15 percent and obesity 18.3 percent in boys. Over-weight – 12 percent and obesity at 7.8 percent in girls) and by 11 years (overweight – 16.2 percent and obesity – 17.0 percent in boys and over-weight at 11.7 percent and obesity – 10.2 percent in girls) (Ho et al., 2019).

The results in this study stand-alone since there is a high level of significance. This is revealed by findings indicating greater BMI between males than in females across all ages at a 0.05 level of significance. The effect size was reported and revealed in a table via mean outcomes in the two different groups in the study. This is meaningful since the readers can easily understand the magnitude of differences found within the groups.
