Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations

Introduction

Advanced practice nursing students are graduating and entering into practice in a period when the scope of practice and roles are dramatically changing due to development in policy and legislation in response to the changing health care needs. Professional nursing organizations provide the opportunity for the profession to influence healthcare standards, health poly, and nursing practice. The paper discusses my future role as a nurse with advanced education in healthcare quality and patient safety, and the role of professional nursing organizations in advancing the influence and scope of advanced nursing.

Scope of my future role as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope

Nurses, as major personnel in the delivery of healthcare, are responsible for delivering care, preventing adverse events, and optimizing patient outcomes. Nurses who work in the field of quality care and patient safety are practitioners with clinical skills, which usually entail licensure as a registered nurse. My future scope of practice (SoP) a nurse who has advanced education in quality care and patient safety will include providing direct patient care and ensuring the quality and safety of care. As indicated by Ricciardi (2018), NPs play a crucial role in ensuring that the care they provide to patients is safe and of superior quality, and they can examine patients, diagnose medical conditions, provide treatments and prescribe medications. Apart from providing safe and quality healthcare that is in line with clinical standards and best evidence, I will also participate in broader organizational and system safety and quality structures. According to Oldland et al. (2020), nurses are professionally mandated to assess, monitor, and give reports on how effective and appropriate health care is, and inform o what can be done to improve the quality of health care. They play the vital role of supporting, implementing, and evaluating electronic health applications to improve the safety of patients and take part in designing and operating facilities, work processes, and equipment for safety. Responsibilities entail consumer-centered care via processes and systems that support continuity of care open disclosure, shared decision making, and sensitivity to health literacy and cultural needs of patients. Additionally, nurses are required to encourage, take part in and apply research evidence in order to improve health care quality and safety, and also demonstrate clinical leadership. Advanced education in healthcare in quality and patient safety equips nurses with the knowledge and skills to fulfill these responsibilities.

APN SoP is usually defined by the nurse practice act (NPA) which is enforced by state boards of nursing. According to Roux and Halstead (2017), nursing practice is cautiously defined with the scope of practice of the profession via the NPAs of individual territories and state. Every territory or state has a NPA which is a state regulatory legislation that its territorial or state BON enforces to promote safe and competent nursing care. NPAs establish BONs with the authority of defining the scope of nursing practice develop regulatory entities and empower delegated entities with regulatory power (Kaplan, 2016). Knecht (2016) asserts that state BONs may have a single NPA or two different NPAs that address both the registered nurse and LVN/LPN scope of practice. The BONs have councils or committees that decide whether certain activities are within the scope of registered nurse practice in their state. In addition to state BONs, several national organizations take part in defining practice. According to Friberg (2019), NCSBN develops the requirements for licensure examinations for nurses, including APN. The ANCC along with numerous national specialty organizations establish educational qualifications, eligibility, examinations, and experience for national certification which is mandatory in numerous states

Three professional nursing organizations that you think are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing

Nurses have historically been involved in organizations that promote the goals of the profession. Professional organizations jointly advocate on their members’ behalf and publicly represent the nursing professions’ core values to others (Roux &Halstead, 2017). The three professional organizations that I deem as the most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced practice are the American Nurses Association(ANA), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the International Council of Nurses.

ANA represents all registered nurses in the US, but not all registered nurses are members. Additionally, ANA represents nurses who are nonmembers since the majority in business, government, and healthcare see the ANA as a voice of nursing. ANA advances the profession of nursing by promoting an ethical and safe work environment for nurses, promoting high nursing practice standards, advocating for issues affecting nurses and the and nurses, and boosting the wellness and health of nurses (Finkelman, 2017). AANP is the biggest professional nursing professional that represents nurse practitioners of all specialties. AANNP was formed following a merger of the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (Niles, 2017). AANP offers legislative leadership at national, state, and local levels, establishing standards and best serve patients receiving NP care as well as other health care consumers, promoting excellence in research, education, and advancing health policy. The ICN is a federation of one hundred and thirty nurses’ associations and represents around sixteen million nurses globally. According to Finkelman (2017), ICN is the global voice of nurses. The organization focuses on activities to improve health care for all and robust health policies internationally. The activities of ICN focus on nursing regulation, professional nursing practice, and nurses’ socioeconomic welfare.

I would most like to join ANA because the organization is at the front position in improving the quality of care for nurses, patients, and the general public. The mission of ANA is to lead the profession to shape the future of health care and nursing. The goal of ANA is to promote and safeguard the welfare of nurses in their workplaces and advocate for issues that affect the general public and nurses. The mission and goals of ANA fit well with my worldview and philosophy of care. I believe that nursing is a profession and not a career and nurses are committed to serving all people. A nurse is obliged to care for people via personal commitment and motivation for improving their quality of life.

Membership in the ANA might improve my practice by uniting me with my peers and providing me with educational conferences and continuing education that is pertinent to my practice. According to Finkelman (2017), membership and active involvement in a professional organization can assist nurses to develop leadership skills, find mentors, and improve networking. Also, membership offers nurses a voice affecting the profession and in some instances, health policy issues, and offers a variety of opportunities for professional development. An evolving issue that is most likely to affect your scope of practice or role in the next few years

Developments and reforms in health care along with the impacts of economic hardships is an evolving issue that might affect my SoP. According to Feringa et al. (2018), globally, registered nurses perform activities that were conventionally the privilege of physicians while there has been relegation of certain nursing tasks to members of the support staff. Tasks are expected to continue to change to registered nurses in the near future, particularly in the context of rising costs of health care and the surfacing of non-communicable diseases around the world. New roles for nurses, including prescribing ARVs and carrying out circumcision were created by the emergence of HIV/AIDs.

The issue could issue influence the profession and other stakeholders because SoP is crucial as it establishes the foundation for compiling job descriptions, curricula, and standards of practice and for safeguarding nurses via a legal framework that specifies who is authorized and qualified to offer specific interventions and services. Additionally, SoP differentiates nursing from other professionals and consequently might avert scope creep from other health professionals (Feringa et al., 2018). Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper

The issue matters to advance practice nurses because nursing is among the key pillars of the execution of health services. Health care reform and scarcity of human health resources imply transferring a variety of health care service roles to APN from other healthcare professionals. Feringa et al. (2018) explain that the most effectual utilization of nurse resources means that nurses be more effective when their practice in accordance with their skill and knowledge level. Nurses utilize SoP to guide them in different work settings to ensure they are performing activities that are legally permitted

Conclusion

The SoP of a nurse with advanced education in healthcare care quality and patient safety includes the provision of direct patient care and to gauge, monitor and provide, and reports on how effective and appropriate health care is to inform in improvements in the quality of health care. APN SoP is mainly defined NPAs which are enforced by state boards of nursing. Professional nursing organizations play a crucial role in influencing advanced nursing by providing the opportunity for the profession to influence healthcare standards, health policy, and nursing practice.
