Clinical Resources
Clinical resources are an essential part of patient care. They help care providers in making accurate assessments, diagnoses and delivering quality care to patients. Therefore, care providers must be aware of the available valuable resources that can help them serve their target populations better and keep updated on arising evidence-based clinical resources. It is also essential for providers to apply various resources to promote safe and quality patient care.
During my experience working with patients, I have seen various resources used in patient diagnosis, assessment, or designing treatment plans. One of the most commonly used resources in patient diagnosis is The Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy 2020 (50th edition) pocket guide. The tool has become instrumental in diagnosing and treating infectious diseases, especially during the age of antibiotic resistance. The resource is widely used by physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other clinicians because it provides timely, concise, and reliable information. I have been using this clinical resource as a clinical reference in my clinical practice to help select appropriate antibiotic therapy for patients presenting with various infectious diseases. This resource guide also includes recommended dosing for antivirals and other ant infectives, guidelines on treatment options of different microbes, appropriate duration of therapy, updates on new drugs, susceptibility and resistance patterns, drug availability, updated evidence-based treatment recommendations, dosing, and potential drug interactions regarding antibiotics (Gilbert, Chambers & Eliopoulos, 2020).
The other clinical resource widely applied in clinical care is the U.S. Preventative Services Prevention Taskforce web page or app. The resource provides evidence-based recommendations for clinical preventive services. It provides reliable guidelines for providers because its recommendations are based on systematic reviews of various research studies (“Home page | United States preventive services Taskforce,” n.d.). The tool allows clinicians to accurately determine each patient’s preventive care services by inputting pertinent patient demographics and other biological and lifestyle aspects to obtain a recommended list of screenings. For clinicians and patients to benefit from these tools, clinicians need to remain updated on periodical evidence-based improvements made on these tools.
